IWC Chrono - to buy or not to buy?

Stopped by my local IWC store and somewhat fell in love, quite unexpectedly, with the “pilots watch chronograph - le petite prince”.

To buy or not to buy?

I own a sub date and AP 15400 (silver) now. I feel a chronograph would be a good addition to my collection.

For what it's worth, if it matters to you like it does to me, I think it's lot of money for what's inside the watch. A modified by IWC but still essentially a Valjoux 7750 which is what put me off (and the thickness).

I owned this watch on a bracelet and it was nice. I would only buy it with a significant discount, 20-25%, as it will take a nice hit on a sale or flip.

Great watch with a awesome looking strap. I would look at grey prices and make them get close. I love the he 7750 by the way. I had a 3717 with it, it kept darn near perfect time and it’s easily serviceable which is a huge plus.

Sound like a potential impulse buy. To be sure its not, suggest you sit on it for a few weeks and see if you still long for it and if yes, only then buy it.

Don't like the look of this one for a number of reasons and would go 3706 pilot chrono or 3711/13 doppelchrono instead. Much more balanced and classic design IMO. Either way make sure you can live w the rotor wobble and noise of Valjoux 7750 based movements.

I own a 3706 from year 2000. Pretty similar, always liked it.

I had a 3777 a while back and it was great but ultimately the ebb and flow of the collection meant that it went to a better home eventually. Agree with previous comment about the movement so I’d never pay retail and there’s more value in buying from a grey or mint pre owned imho.

7750 is a great movement, and it is easily serviceable by any independent watchmaker. The same cannot be said of the new in-house movement. Don't let your decision be swayed just because of this movement. In fact, for me, having the 7750 inside is a positive, and I would indeed buy that watch. I love IWC pilots.

I love the blue dial on this version. Recently tried it on myself, but I'd rather have the new Spitfire Chrono if I were to purchase. The local AD had it marked up above msrp, which always annoys me.

I agree with this. The 7750 gets a lot of heat for being a pedestrian movement. However, it is a proven engine that can be serviced by pretty much everyone. I would not hesitate based on movement alone.

The 3777 is a fantastic watch. I have an older, black dial “triple date window” model (which most seem to dislike, but that’s just, like, their opinion, man...).
I completely agree with those who admire the 7750. It’s a durable, reliable, serviceable movement. In IWC’s care, the 7750 is capable of tremendous accuracy.
The “fit and finish” of the IWC Pilot is part of its appeal. The reliability and accuracy is icing on the cake. It’s an iconic watch that should serve you well for decades (or days if you’re a serial watch flipper). It’s easy to read. Get one!
BTW, I love the IWC chronographs with the 7750s so much, the Pilot is one of seven such IWC chronographs I own, and only occasionally do I wear anything else! I’m wearing an “oldie” today from 1982:

Awesome watch, I think it would go very nicely in your lineup. Love the blue dial as well. Nice movement, robust and serviceable. Super legible dial.
