Phones can work well, but need proper lighting and a good stand and remote shutter. You can buy a decent set up for a phone on the cheap on Amazon. A few years back I was into taking the time to take good watch pictures, but last couple years, just point and click with my iPhone.
Now Jocke takes some real photographs.

Experiment in different lighting conditions.
As mentioned you don’t need state of the art photography equipment. Avoid using digital zoom. |

Just my phone usually - depending what type of photo you’re going for, the composition of the shot matters a huge amount too.
A few examples - all quick snaps with my phone. No special lighting or stands. The macro shot is with a $10 clip on lens from amazon.

I've got a Nikon D3300 and I play around with lighting. It's really the lighting that's most important. Even with a phone, a properly lighted shot will look really good. This was a quick and dirty "light paint" with my Nikon. Use my cell phone with a blank white screen to "paint" the lighting using a long shutter. But, it's not difficult, nor time consuming to take a shot like this.

I use my phone and hope for the best. Not the kind of thing I'll take too much time to sweat over.
