5131 1p: go or no-go
Just got a call from my AD that I can get a 5131 platinum if I want. Stunning watch, but for the bracelet. If I buy, I would wear it on a leather strap.
Where I am in doubt is if a 5131g doesn’t t make more sense. The market for 5131g has weakened and the grey price is 30k less than retail on the platinum. And althought I don’t buy to sell the watch, I don’t want to take a big hit if I ever decide to sell in 4-5 years from now. And here I just don’t know how the market for the 5131 platinum will evolve. Currently seems rather illiquid, I assume because of the high price and the bracelet. On the other hand a full platinum bracelet is rare for a Patek, and once this watch is discontinued (is assume soon now that the 5231j was launched), it might become a collectable piece. Any views on my luxury problem welcome! Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk |

My opinion, if money is an issue, forget it. And, what exactly do you like about the watch?

Depends what else you have
I.like the 5131G a lot and I.like white metals so yes that's a hot favourite. The bracelet is def an acquired taste and certainly pushed the price to a different level. Production of 5131G is long done so you can take a view of how many are in the market where as the P is an unknown. Certainly in the UK they are not taking new orders for the P as its believed to be discontinued. So i am.guessing it's an existing allocation to a dealer that's being filled. I believe with a bit of luck the 5131G can be had at between $95-105k and the P probably $145k. Guess u have to work.out if the bracelet is worth $40k....seems a lot

Can't speculate about the future value of the watch but it is an absolutely amazing piece and the dial is a piece of art. If I get a chance I will definitely jump on it.

Yeah, one would think it’s a collectible piece, it’s got a lot going for it, platinum bracelet (which is rare for a Patek), world time enamel, and etc. but for whatever reason the market price doesn’t not reflect it. Perhaps it is because due the the popularity of the gold world timers, Patek set the P price too high. If you can buy it at MSRP you won’t lose money. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

Not sure how PP prices Platinum. The only 5130P was GBP 40000 and the 5130G was GBP 27000 almost double. Someone could look at current prices and see if there is a correlation....

It’s a lovely watch but like others the bracelet just doesn’t do it for me and like you I would end up taking it off and putting it on a nice strap. I love enamel dials I just prefer the ones on the 5131J/G/R. What are your thoughts on the 5231J? If you’re prepared to wait for the 5231G don’t accept the P as you might prejudice your position! OP if you remotely are worried about holding value. I would pass. Application pieces are not ur run of the mill pieces... i think there is more of a commitment to keep it. There are of course the stories of being blacklisted if you flip an application piece.

Unless 100%, pass. For that coin you should be thrilled and excited. If you have hesitations now...later?

Don’t do it! You will be setting yourself up to lose a lot of money. If you really love the piece and don’t mind a hit of at least $40k when and if you sell then ok. Doesn’t sound like that is the case from what you said - pass. Just mo.

Yes and I have 5130P, 5130G 5575, 5930 etc etc so let's say I collect WT ....I also.like white metals so when was given a choice between R and P I went P knowing that there is less upside in value. I disliked the bracelet enormously and felt it was very 70's....however I now "get it" and love the weight and the feel of the bracelet...I have straps on everything so brings nice diversity...I am near to closing on a 5131G so just building a collection

Why would it make a WT redundant.....are they thinking of also changing longitude?

If you can afford it and don't mind taking a hit when you sell, then buy it. I would go white gold myself.

Good grief...I think you need to read up about WT and GMT and SLS. If anything the cancellation.of DLS accurate and alleviate kne of its shortcomings in that it doesnt account for DLS!!!! If SLS is cancelled then everything is aligned to GMT
