Planet Ocean 2201 vs Seamaster 2245
Ok guys, I’m at an impasse here and need some outside opinions to help me out. I read probably 20 threads regarding this topic and still can’t decide.
I’m looking for a nice beater watch. Something I really don’t give a crap about, but I know can handle not being given a crap about and I’ve settled on these two. Prices aren’t terribly far apart right now, ~$700 difference between the two. Is the PO $700 more watch? My biggest preference is the size. I have a small (6.5”) wrist and would prefer the one that wears smaller. It’s hard to get a consensus on the size of these and I’ve seen measurements were the PO bezel is 40mm which I guess should make it wear like a 40mm. Does anyone have dial measurements for both? Lug to lug seems about the same between the two. How do they wear compared to a speedmaster. That’s the largest watch I own and feel comfortable wearing. I also have an skx007 and I really don’t like how thick it is. Is the PO about the same ? I’ve seen conflicting thickness measurements. Anywhere from 13mm-15 and change. I know the 2254 is nice and thin. Thanks in advance guys. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

The PO series does for a fact wear tall like a SKX. The 2254 wears flush on the wrist since it does not have the bubble caseback.

I get the sense a 2254.50 fits the bill a bit better for a couple of reasons: it probably will "disappear" on your wrist better than the PO will, and I think the simplicity of the escapement in the 2254.50 is an advantage in a watch meant for rigorous use (I don't have facts to back this up, just my sense that the traditional escapement is more tried-and-true than the first-generation co-axials were).

Thanks guys. Looks like the 2254 is the overwhelming answer.

First gen (2500 movement) Planet Ocean wear MUCH slimmer than the current hamburgers and much better than the exebition back ones.
I have the 45.5mm version, as well as an SKX007J and the Seiko wears "taller" due to the somewhat "squared-off" bezel top; whereas the PO bezel is angled away from the domed crystal. So, the transition to the "tallest point" on the watch is smooth and gradual, unlike the SKX with the tallest point being the perimeter of the bezel. And if you go with the 42mm (which I'm considering "downgrading" to) it is slightly thinner I think as well (but not certain). That said, the SM300 will wear slimmer- I had the "great white" GMT before my Planet Ocean and that wears slimmer. The GMT lacks the Helium valve, but otherwise it's the same case. I believe the SM300 is also 42mm and I suspect the appearance on the wrist between these two will be similar. One last detail (you probably already know) is the PO has dual AR coating which scratches easily on the outside. (The inside is surprisingly difficult to scratch!!) And the SM300 has inside AR coating only. So, it will look cleaner over the long haul although I apply car wax to my crystal periodically to make the surface scratches disappear every so often... |

I have the 2254 and love it. My go to watch (wearing it right now!)
Fun fact: This watch is worn by the lead character on the Ray Donovan series. Cool. |

The 2254 is such a cool classic Omega, really more of a throw-back to the old SMs than any of the newer models, in part because of the large triangle at 12, the fabulous sword hands and the thin profile. Just a beautiful diver with old-school DNA.
I've had two of them through the years, but sold them to fund other watches. I will soon get another one that hopefully I will keep longterm. The really nice examples are getting harder to find as the years move on, but the pricing is still relatively reasonable. I would definitely wear one over any of the P0s, which I've also owned. |

He wears the quartz version, the 2264.50. There was a close-up a season or two ago, and you could see the tick of the quartz movement on the seconds hand.

POs are the real deal. No wrong answer here but the PO is a stout monkey.
