Most Aussies (generally and on this board) are really nice and well mannered - i'll apologises on behalf as he is absolutely classless.
In one of his other threads where I called him out on a fake ebay listing (he claimed he was "testing the waters" but regardless against T&Cs), he PM'ed me this nasty message. I would suggest just ignoring him going forward, its clear our advice goes unappreciated anyway. |

I ended up buying this for $8000 AUD, so around 5800 USD.
Thanks for the positive advice in this thread, I really do appreciate it. My jeweller (who is ex Rolex and still has access via other watch makers to many vintage parts) has already source a replacement dial, hand set and bezel insert from the mid 70's (when this piece was last servived - 06/74). I am not aiming for a red dial here, just a 1969 Sub I can wear daily. I feel like I have done very well here. In total I should have this piece completed for around 9000 USD. I will upload some photos when its done. |

Ok, fair enough I do appreciate it. But just saying 'its wrong' is all I have been getting. I am cusrious as to what they are referring to? I am still in a position to easily return this piece.

I'd like to learn you know. Is it the case, the bezel, the crown? What are the tells here?
My jeweller stated the watch was only serviced by Rolex, in 1974, 1996 and 2002, just the three times. The movement is clean and he said only requires a light service. It appears to me whoever owned this piece in recent years was just a total hack and three dials, handsets and all sorts at this watch. The bezel insert is odd. I am calling fake on that, but others are saying its a rolex service part that was artificially aged. |

The crown and bezel were replaced in 2002 I believe. My jeweller actually knows the Rolex service agent who performed the work.

Let’s see the engravings between the lugs. Then we can determine if the case is at least authentic. It is still very worn and poorly polished. The dial and hands are fake as mentioned in at least two threads now.
I’ll echo what I said a long time ago. Nothing have changed. Quote:

OK, but I am merely asking you to state what it is you are seeing. Its not too many things to list I presume, so cant you just lay them out here in a list so I know?

Is that enough to write a 1680 off for $5800 USD?

If you look at it objectively- as a collection of parts, you got a reasonable deal on a case, Case back, bezel ring, crystal retainer, crown, tube, bracelet and movement. I don’t remember if the date ring is original or service but I’m assuming the latter.
As soft as the case is, it can be restored, although many collectors frown upon that. On the other hand, a complete classic car with a crunched quarter is acceptable to get metal welded in and paint done... In summary, the “heavy iron” is not fake (even if not era correct) but it would take a significant investment to properly restore this watch to “catalogue correct”. Most collectors move on to buy a more complete, sharper cases example for a larger investment , which can be a smaller one in the long run in many cases. Buy it and wear it. It’s just a watch. |

Hi Jim, thanks for the comments. The date wheel is white, so that is a later service replacement?

What he said. Silver with open sixes and nines. Not sure if the six in 26 was closed or open... I think open in ‘69 but soon after closed with other sixes and nines remaining open. Perhaps already closed in ‘69...
But no matter since it’s a wearing piece. |
