Icon17 Servicing a vintage GMT-Master 1675

Hey TRF,

I started working on this old worn and badly polished GMT-Master 1675.
Customer wants it polished again so I did the best I could to make it look good again.

Crown thread was worn so it needs a new crown and tube and a new plexi to ensure water resistance.
We ran out of two movement parts that I need so I'll continue working on this when the our new supply of parts is coming in from Geneva next week.

Looks amazing so far, Bas. Boy, he really got his money’s worth out of that plexi, huh!

Very nice. I would have just had a new crystal and movement service but each owner is different.

Love to see this. My 1675 1959 model is just back from getting a new crown and tube and crystal. Took months for my watch maker to find the correct crown, as the old one had very worn threads.

Looking great, Bas! Are you doing anything with the hands to stop the tritium from cracking and falling out?

Great work and photos as always.

Case looks better IMO as it doesn’t appear much material was removed but rather it fixed the previous overpolishing.

With future wabi it will look even better.

Looks great. What an incredible skill-set. Hope it’s not a silly question, but how do you know where to polish and what to leave?

Going to apply a very thin layer of clear glue underneath so that the lume stays in place

Depends on where the dent/scratch is located and how deep it is. Most things can be buffed out easily.
You'll learn over time what you can get out and what to leave.

There was a deeper scratch on one of the lugs, even after refinishing it is still slightly visible so I'm going to leave that.

I own a Pepsi 1675 from 1974. I realize older hands are not gold but it amazes me how they can start to corrode when the case is supposed to be sealed shut. Do the lubricants form a gas that affects the hands?

There's still moisture in the air inside the case and over time this can lead to corrosion. You could also have a old/faulty/damaged gasket.

Great job Bas! That watch looks superb, plexiglass should make a comeback.

1675 would definitely be the next watch for me. How much would an ‘ok’ one be? Eg scratched, no box or papers and in need of a service but basically sound.

Real craftsmanship, beautiful work Bas.

Please post more of your work.
Even stuff you might perhaps find mundane, I'm sure would be of interest to many members.

ps. What's the 'RB'?
