Rolex Explorer Vs Datejust 41 /36

Hi guys I’m new here and it’s my first post! Can’t decide between Exp and DJ41

Any thoughts?
Also I’m not sure if it fits my wrist, DJ36 seems fits nicely but sometime I think it’s too small

I have a Speedmaster pro for about two years, looking for a Rolex as a daily wearer,
My attire is smart casual most of the time , rarely wear suits. I live an active lifestyle and the Rolex InHouse Paraflex absorber attracts me towards these watches however I realized only DJ36 TwoTone comes with that.

I do like the Explorer a lot to be honest, but DJ is classic too

I might be biased here, but I recently went through a similar decision to yours. I actually bought the Explorer 214270 Mk2 (the one in your picture) and loved the look, but found the dial to look slightly too large on my 7" wrist. So I sold it and just yesterday bought the exact same Datejust in your last picture -- the 116200 with silver dial on an oyster. I found that the DJ36 wears larger than 36mm and looks great. I'd encourage you to give it a shot.

Wow it looks great on your wrist the ink really makes your DJ36 pops (or other way round ;)

Yes I agree. The proportions on the DJ36 are incredible. The other two watches are beautiful as well, you can't go wrong. Just pick what makes you happy

Ah I think the Exp1 will work best for you as a daily, DJs are inherently dressier IMO. I used to own a Speedy Pro and I currently own a 36mm Explorer 1. I would say go for a 36mm Exp1 as 36 seems to fit best on you if you are okay with a used watch. If that’s too small or you want new, then just go with a 214270 mk2! Last thing to note is that going from a 42mm Speedy to a 36mm will take some time to get used to. Good luck and hope you have an incoming soon!

I think the 36mm looks best. Don’t worry about Paraflex. It’s just Rolex’s branded shock system, and it’s improvements over the KIF system are dubious.

I have a fairly large wrist and I wear both a 36 and 41. Personally, I like the size of the 41 for my wrist, but the 36 is timeless and looks great on your wrist. A 36 on oyster would be very versatile.

I’ve tried Exp II it’s too overwhelming
I’ve put on a Sub, strangely it wear smaller than the Exp 39 but it has older movement and I believe it will be replaced soon like the SD 50th anniversary.

You might want to consider a pre owned 36MM Explorer. That's what I would do. A very classic watch.

If you're considering something without a date, why not consider the new black Oyster Perpetual 36mm in black? It's more or less an Explorer, minus a couple of things.

The proportions on the DJ36 is classic. I have a 6.75 wrist and DJ36 fits perfect.

The DJ36 fits you perfectly. Thinking a watch is to small once in a while is a lot better than thinking it's too big. I can live with the too small. The too big gets in my head, and before you know it I'm jot wearing the watch anymore. That's from a guy with +8" wrist.

Opposite here. Rather alittle too big than on the small side.

Hi I think I have come to realize that DJ41 is not for me (good news!) despite its impressive movement.
So now it’s the DJ36 and Exp 1
Exp 1
Pros: Looks versatile, shock absorber
Cons: looks bad on my wrist (?)

DJ36
Pros: good proportion and looks great on my wrist
Cons: older movement (to be replaced soon), PCL too bling for everyday wear


I’ve look into the OP models but I think DJ and Exp are the more iconic piece for my first Rolex (no offense)

As I mentioned above, don't worry about the shock absorber. Paraflex is just Rolex's brand name version of a shock system, and the other Rolex watches still have the KIF shock system that is similar. I doubt there's really any difference in it.

You may be right, I realized my Speedmaster tend to gain 10s per day when I do extreme sports, drumming etc.
not sure how Rolex will cope with that

All of my Rolexes have been a lot better at +-/day than my Speedy and I don't baby my watches. Don't overthink it. Good luck!

One more question, does the 214270 look too big on my wrist?

I admit I lean more towards the EXP despite the DJ36 looks nicer on my wrist, however if it’s too big then I might regret and end up flipping it, I did considered 114270 however the new EXP bracelet is truly outstanding

I own a 214270, but am debating flipping it for a DJ41. I’d say go DJ41. The one thing that I personally don’t like about the DJ36 happens to be the bezel. I don’t like the domed bezel. I think that the smooth bezel on the DJ41 and the Explorer is sharper and sportier. So for a everyday wear “sports” watch I’d say go DJ41 or Explorer. The other factor you want to consider is if you want polished center links. I kind of like them because of the contrast so that’s why I’m considering getting a DJ41. Congrats though! Can’t waot to see what you end up with.
