Auction in England

I paid attention to the auction by Wilsons today, which was no-reserve and had a few interesting pieces (DJ41 wimbeldon, 116505 and a 360 Modena). Neither watch came with box nor papers. I had some hope that the 116505 could be had at a solid discount, but it ended up selling around GBP 20k, which, when you add the 20% buyer's premium and 24% VAT (on buyers premium), ends up being around $30k. I figured there was only a small chance I'd be able to buy it at a decent price, but I was surprised to see it sell for that much, given its ... provenance.

(the 360 went for around $50k, if I recall correctly).

Did anyone else here see this? I guess I'm kind of shocked that anyone would pay that much, considering what you could have a complete set for here on TRF, from reputable sellers.

Was thinking the same. The whole auction appears to be a rap star starter-kit.

That's debatable.

"FS: Used Gold Rolex Daytona.
  • No Box
  • No Papers
  • Purchased at govt auction
  • Former owner was a local drug dealer; currently an inmate

Asking above MSRP because of provenance noted above."

It tells you that in the write up at the start of the catalogue. It says it is from a UK Polce Drug raid etc...

I just can't understand why the Daytona fetched that amount. But maybe to some, its provenance was actually worth something. I don't think there'd be an issue sourcing one of these watches here on the forum in a complete kit, for the same, or marginally more, amount of money.

Most of the items were an absolute riot. I know style is individual, but...
