I like the groove in that song, but Metheny’s playing gets a bit onanistic for my liking. For 80s-ish jazz studs, personally prefer Bill Frisell (with Paul Motian and Joe Lovano).

1.Prince 2. Prince 3.Prince 4. Prince 5.John Petrucci from Dream Theater covering Prince Purple Rain. I thought the Ibanez was singing at one point and my eyes got a little watery. Honorable Mention. Adam Levine covering Prince Purple Rain at Howard sterns birthday party.

Glad to see someone mentioned Steve Rothery of Marillion on Easter. Not a shredder but a very emotional player who can pluck the heartstrings as well as the guitar strings!

Would need to think about top5 all time.. but can’t believe no one mentioned Hotel California yet. Joe Walsh/Don Felder duo is such a classic.

Off top of my head:

Eric Johnson’s cliff of Dover

And funtwo’s Cannon Rock (watch the 2012 video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ilOwXH5p1R0
So clean!)

Of course EVH’s Eruption.

"Luke" has played on more records than most people realize. While I love the Rosanna solo, the outro solo is better IMHO. It just rips.

Check out the solo in "Running with the Night" by Lionel Richie. The last two minutes are Lukather at his best.

two for one deal... Frank Zappa and a VERY young Adrian Belew in the same performance

Adrian Belew demonstrating his new signature model more than a decade ago at TCAN... an absolutely amazing performance in extremely subtle control of style and voicing of technique that doesn't overtly slap you in the face! A hypnotizing performance.

and of course Monty Montgomery's wondrous version of 'little wing'

Dave Mustaine Megadeth is underrated. Just about every song has a great solo in it, but my fav Mustaine guitar work is in Hanger 18, Tornado of Souls, and Ashes in Your Mouth.
Jake Lee Bark at the Moon
Randy Rhoades Believer or take your pick of any song he plays with Ozzy
Eddie Van Halen Push Comes to Shove is my fav but again lots of choices for EVH, but this song is a little bluesy/funky
Metallica One or Four Horsemen

Probably are. Here's a published story re the rehearsal and performance. Seems like Marc Mann was the one angling to grab the solo(s) spotlight....

Quote:
In the days after Prince died, the New York Times ran an article about the performance in which Petty and others who performed with Prince that night shared their memories. According to the paper, the show’s producer, Joel Gallen, asked Prince to play the song’s solos, since he was there to be inducted anyway. But during rehearsals, Marc Mann, who plays guitar with Lynne, took over, knocking out a note-perfect recreation of Eric Clapton’s original mid-song solo.

“And we get to the big end solo,” Gallen says, “and Prince again steps forward to go into the solo, and this guy starts playing that solo too!”

There wasn’t time to get it right, but Prince assured Gallen everything would be fine at the performance. He told the producer to let Mann take the first solo, and he would perform the extended outro solo. “They never rehearsed it, really,” Gallen says. “Never really showed us what he was going to do, and he left, basically telling me, the producer of the show, not to worry.

“And the rest is history. It became one of the most satisfying musical moments in my history of watching and producing live music.”

Though Prince is onstage the entire time, he stands off to the side until the end, when he takes center stage. From that point on, the show is entirely his. His slick stage move at 4:43 and his guitar face at 5:05 are as enjoyable as anything he plays...and he plays up a storm. The smile on the face of Dhani Harrison—George Harrison’s son, who plays acoustic guitar on the number—shows how much he was enjoying Prince’s star-turn on his father’s song.

+1 for Zakk Wylde. He was only 20-21 years old for his first album with Ozzy.

I'm going to throw in a different one.
It's a bass guitar solo. Not too many of those.
BASSically Speaking by Brian Bromberg.

It redefined what I thought a bass guitar player could do when I heard it.
Check it out.

Haha! Nice. A shame Brix Smith didn’t make the cut.
