Prince Philip, husband of Queen Elizabeth II, dead at 99

Prince Philip, husband of Britain's Queen Elizabeth II, has died, the royal family announced Friday. He was 99.

"His Royal Highness passed away peacefully this morning at Windsor Castle," the family said in a statement.

It is with deep sorrow that Her Majesty The Queen has announced the death of her beloved husband, His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh.

His Royal Highness passed away peacefully this morning at Windsor Castle. April 9, 2021

He had been hospitalized in February and underwent surgery for a heart condition. He and the queen were married for over 73 years.

RIP. Might have been a polarizing figure to some, but what a life he led. He understood service. It's a shame that they will have to limit his memorial and funeral due to Covid. I truly feel sorry for Queen Elizabeth.

I liked him.

Not perfect, but a man of duty and you knew what you got.

That’s hard to find today.

I honestly thought he would see his 100th birthday, and while not a great surprise given his age it’s still saddening . My thoughts are with the Queen .

I too was hoping he would pull to 100.

In watching the Crown, I have been familiarized (albeit in a possibly slanted view) to what a complex man he was living as he did in the shadow of one of the world’s most powerful people.

RIP.

I liked the man. He didn’t pull any punches. A product of that “Great Generation”. Pity we will never see the likes of them again. RIP.

An honourable life of humble service. A loyal husband.

I feel badly for the Queen. She doesn't need this now.

He was also present at the Japanese surrender in WWII. Some say had he not had to give up his navy career he could have made First Sea Lord. A public figure who like the Queen, even for us older people has been around longer than we have.

I thought he had one of the toughest jobs in the world.
Some perks, sure, but you'd need those to stay sane.
An upper-class man of his times, he thought he had a right to an opinion and wasn't reticent in sharing it. You could like it or lump it. Good on you Phil - wish we could say the same.
He must have had a hell of a life and appeared to find a balance between duty and personal interests. His health appeared to be good into his early 90s which in itself is a great blessing. RIP.

Seems like a solid guy. Protective of his family, loved his adopted country, was a good leader and had a good sense of humor. Had a very interesting life. RIP Philip.

Prince Philip left a legacy for the world to see, he is a well-loved and well-liked man. Condolences to the Royal Family. There is no good time to lose someone, but it is more of a celebration of life when someone has lived for so long. RIP Philip.
