These were not people looking for a grand complication, they simply wanted a Swiss luxury watch.

There is a sizeable part of the watch economy there catering to tourists, especially with common models.

One thing you have to understand, the tourists were 'not' buying hot items.
Like you I have dealt with them in London (on their UK leg of their euro tour) and they end up buying usually TT DJ. I can still see the Shops grinning from ear to ear.
