During selection, I was asked if I was in anyway associated with the San Diego Police Department, I replied that yes, I was. I am a volunteer using my metal detector to search for evidence at crime scenes whenever called (all true). I am excused immediately by the defense every time.

It has to be a believable excuse; you'd be better off claiming alien abduction or something.

Not sure about other states, but in SC when I was an officer, a person could request a jury trial for anything, even a traffic ticket. What it turned into was just a way to prolong the trial and usually a city prosecutor would just "make it go away" to save the time and expense.

I just told them I hate lawyers......

It worked. Good thing they didn't ask me what I thought of judges.

I was foreman of a jury when I was in my 20’s. I was shocked at some of the other jurors wanting to convict the defendant when the evidence against had an error rate that put him in the legal limit. Pretty scary having your fate in the hands the general public.

I am somewhat of an expert on jury duty in New York State. I’ve been called at least 13 times over the last 40 years. I’ve been called for both regular jury as well as grand jury (3X).
In my experience there is no "magic statement" that will get you out of duty. Sure, you can say many things to get dismissed from any particular jury, but the judge has the ability to send you back to the jury room to wait for another case that needs to seat a jury.
Judges tend to be fairly savvy with the excuses people come up with and can, and will, push back on people trying to beat the system.

I got called in 2012. First and only time ever hopefully. Showed up, they let me keep my phone n paid for my parking right off the start. Went into the room and started with the questionnaire with a rather decent amount of other people, the place was packed. Think there was a question that asked if I had ever been arrested and I put down at least a dozen times but never convicted of a crime ever(in my 20s things got kinda wild)and I think there was another question that asked why I think I would not be fit to stand on a jury and I put Courts and lawyers make me uncomfortable, I strongly dislike them. I tend to side with the criminals and root for the bad guys 99% of the time. They called me up to the lawyers n judge n read my paperwork and the judge and lawyers started laughing and asked me one question. “Can we just ask you who your attorney is that managed to get you out of a dozen crimes without a charge” I told them, “ sir you are free to exit back to the waiting room and may leave at 4pm” so I didn’t get to go home but I got to sit n eat finger sandwiches n play poker on my phone and they let us go get coffee and pizza across the street at any time u just had to sign a sheet n sign back in. Out of a room full of people it was just me and a friend from high school and maybe 2 or three others that escaped that day. Flat out tell them you hate the law and the court system no attorney or judge anywhere wants that in the courtroom.

Been called for jury duty three times, felt it my responsibility as a citizen to participate. But, I was never chosen to sit, I’ll never go back.

Or do like comedian Steve Martin and tweet from court:

“@SteveMartinToGo, the comedian, a prospective juror, at 12:10 p.m. Monday tweeted: "REPORT FROM JURY DUTY: defendant looks like a murderer. GUILTY. Waiting for opening remarks."

I think they were a series of tweets he sent (fake tweeting) but the jury duty was real

I know a lot of it is just joking around and I suppose I've always had a job where jury duty wouldn't impact my pay...but I never once tried to get out of it.

If folks like you (generic) don't participate, you'll be left with folks like me (actual) making the call for you and yours, etc. What could go wrong?

Having sat on Juries with complete Numb-nuts it is clear to me that those of us with a good IQ, stable life experience and some common sense have an absolute obligation to make ourselves available for Jury service no matter how inconvenient, otherwise Justice is very poorly served when only people without an excuse comprise Juries.
I have been staggered at the inability of Jurors to be able to comprehend "Burden of Proof" and apply it to a case, seemingly preferring to rely on 'gut-feel'.

As a trial attorney who does a lot of criminal defense, I second this.

I typically spend quite a bit of time in jury selection talking about the burden of proof, who has that burden, etc. Jurors also often don’t understand when I tell them that as the defense, I don’t have to prove anything.

For criminal cases, Tell the DA, the defense attorneys and the Judge the truth - that you are biased, that you aren’t suitable and that you can not do your civic duty in an open minded manner.
For civil, tell plaintiff and defense attorneys and judges that you are prejudiced and close minded. Also explain that you would be a totally biased juror and are incapable of being fair.

Next time don't do it under a streetlight in front of the 24 hour White Castle Hamburger joint when a fully marked cop car is second in line at the drive through window.

Or all that try to dodge the jury duty, I guess that this all changes, when your destiny depends on the verdict of such a jury.

Hey, what can I say. When you got to go, you got to go.

Jury duty does sound like an experience. I checked off jury trial one time for a small moving violation. Bet they were disappointed.

Throw a wildcard in the pot eh

Honestly just showing up in overalls might be enough if you’re in a city lol
