Because people feel the need to give stuff a nickname is my best guess. I've done it myself. But I'm more apt to call it a Panerai or Rolex. Either way is fine and we all know what they mean.

But the above poster is correct. PAM = PAnerai Model

To sound over familiar or lazy is my guess.

oem = original equipment manufacturer

meaning the strap was sold by Panerai.

oem is true for anything, whether it is a computer, a camera, a rolex, etc. Basically any equipment released by the manufacturer.

That's the proper pronunciation, but i never ever use it as it sounds really daft in a Scottish accent, so the proper way of saying it for us is 'panerae'

This is the diminutive of the proper nouns Panerai and Rolex. People often change the name of many physical objects of desire and it stems from Scottish-Dutch diminutive, like mommy, doggy, kitty etc. People apply the diminutive to the words to express affection, which I find slightly annoying. ?

However, I think many times it is a mutated effort at the diminutive where the actual intent is to be esoteric (like PAM for Panerai), or perhaps that it is much easier to pronounce or sounds more enthusiastic?

For example, in the world of audio, Magnepan loudspeakers are often referred to as Maggies. Or Yamaha becomes Yammie.

For the record, I don't condone this sort of thing.
