100 Days
No booze.
Original target was 60 days. But felt good. Figured I’d do 100. Now I’m thinking I’ll keep it going. Was going to drink over the holidays. Figured I’ll make it a yearly tradition. Drink the last two weeks of every year, and then start it over again. But got thinking about how it’ll make me feel. And I know I won’t feel great. I know I’ll regret it. And while I’m not exactly counting, I don’t want to start from 0 again. So screw it, maybe I just don’t drink again. Time will tell I suppose. I do miss it. But I sleep way better. My workouts are better. My decision making is better. I have a cleaner brain, less fog. And I’m down 10lbs. I also no longer get into pissing contests on TRF anymore. Well, rarely anyway. Figured I’d share. It’s a nice win. Cheers all.

i have always found it weird that not drinking is frowned upon and that every social event basically requires it. really feel for people who have drinking problems and try to stay sober because it can quickly put lives into a downward spiral. i've personally never been a heavy drinker although i enjoy it every now and then but in general i feel like it's a giant money sink, makes you feel like shit the day after and is a net negative overall. could definitely go without it
i think it's good that you know you can go without it if you feel the need to in the future |

Congratulations, Seth. I used to drink pretty frequently but quit.
I have seen people try dry January, or only drink on weekends/holidays/etc. — but at the end of the day, if I’m looking forward to my next drink then I consider that a problem. Even if it’s January 1 and my “next drink” will be Thanksgiving |

I try 3 days in a row every week. Usually manage 2. I drink maximum 2 glasses of red wine.

I do dry January every year. And one year I went until the end of February. This is my longest time in 20 years. Started drinking at 28, and I’m now 48. I didn’t stop, because I can’t stop. I imagine by definition I’d be considered “functioning alcoholic”, but only because I enjoy it and I did tend to drink daily. Not a heck of a lot. And I was rarely if ever drunk, but I definitely looked forward to the end of the day. I stopped because I was having digestion issues. And I was having trouble sleeping. It was starting to effect my workouts, which is not acceptable. I take my fitness relatively seriously. And I’ve found I very much enjoy not drinking. My social life has changed dramatically. But that’s okay. Definitely happier now than I was. So it looks like I’ll stay this way until I find a reason otherwise. I’m definitely a bit proud of myself. It was a habit more than anything else, I think. But definitely a habit I enjoyed. Most of the time anyway.

Thats a great accomplishment Seth. I say keep it going, you get through this holiday season with no booze and no significant other, you are an absolute champ. Funny thing is, I know you can pull it off, you are a very strong human.

Congratulations!!!
I am very proud to be sober for 2 years, 2 months, 28 days. I think I had a drinking problem, 3-4 nights a week, waking up with a headache most of time, generally being unhappy with myself. I was drinking pretty good stuff, but I was certainly drinking to get drunk. I so very appreciate waking up clear and fresh. My social life changed, too, and I bow out of social interactions, but I feel proud for what I've done and look forward to the years ahead alcohol free. Always happy to be a listening ear or chat with anyone thinking about it or making their own commitments. Power in numbers. |

Congrats, Seth!
I’m in my 40s and have drank hard since ~college (partied in high school, but wasn’t drinking daily). I got sick last Dec and stopped drinking to help recover quicker, then kept it going. I know myself and I don’t want stop forever (plus I don’t want to keep thinking about it) so I decided to drink over any major holiday weekend. It’s been a great solution… I still can have the social aspect with friends and family over long holidays, but I feel rough afterwards so I have zero desire to keep drinking. Drink 5-10x a year and it’s a perfect balance. |

Congratulations Superdog! 100 days is a good start! Really, if you can do 100, you can do 365.
You’ll see, every day is up! If I had a hankering, I’d repeat this phrase: Never Question the Decision. 6 years, 2 months and 22 days dry for me. Sobriety is liberating. Keep it up and enjoy. Wishing you the best. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Proud of you man. I love hearing stuff like this.
I could write TRF’s longest post ever explaining my relationship with alcohol for the last 20 years but I’ll spare everyone. I always wanted a way out and couldn’t until i had my son and new i didn’t want him to see that. Couldn’t do it to him. Hardest thing I’ve ever done in my life was putting down the bottle and it’s a daily battle between the ears. Just made it past 18 months sober and have no intention of ever picking up a drink again. Keep it up. It’s created a much better life for me and the ones around me.

I've never been much of a drinker but now that I'm in my 50's I can explain it away that I cannot drink because of my medication.

Congratulations, sir. Regardless of the physical aspects, quitting drinking has to be one of the most mentally difficult things to do in Western culture. Alcohol is everywhere, and even people who mean well and offer their full support still raise an eyebrow when you're offered a drink and turn it down (especially the first time they see you abstaining in the early days.) My wife quit about three years ago, and she says any affection/nostalgia she has for a good drink is far outweighed by the benefits she's gained (many of which you listed yourself!) It's been really great to see how restaurants and supermarkets have gone from offering O'Doul's to now often having extensive non-alcoholic beer and mocktail menus.
If you're looking for some online inspiration or support, Annie Grace has an Instagram called @ThisNakedMind (it's also a book and a podcast.) It's generally women-focused, but the ideas and stories are universal. I'll raise a glass of root beer to your next hundred days, and I hope the people in your life are understanding and supportive of your decisions. |

100 Days
Seth, this is basically how i started, and i hit 10 years November 6th. Eventually everyone i knew heard about me not drinking so it got the point where i could never really drink again without everyone looking at me. Which is great! Best thing i ever did.
I liked wine and beer and drinking. But i don’t think alcohol worked very well in my system, i felt awful constantly. If you’re a beer guy, there are a ton of awesome non alcoholic beers now. I get what i want without any of the negatives it’s great. Best of luck dude! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

Well done. Definently a life changer
I had the hangovers of all hangovers in 2004 (watching the euros football at time). Ruined a whole weekend of plans & something clicked that I’d never ever get in that state again & never have. I have a mid week malt every Wed. 2 on a Sat & 2 on a Sunday. If I have a beer at weekend/ then 1 malt. Any social occasion/ 5s my limit every time as no harm done. Probably lost 2 so called close friends at the start who it turned out were just drinking buddies. |

Good on ya', Seth!! I still enjoy 2 to 3 drinks a week, which is way down from years ago.
I have many friends that decided they've done enough and don't need anymore. Everyone of them is happy w/ their decision. dP
