RSC Says No!!

the Rolex RSC in NY returned my 1680 (red, metres first) and would not perform service because they couldn't guarantee they'd have the necessary parts. I want to get it serviced, can anyone recommend a trustworthy, competent and reliable alternative?

The independent Rolex Serivce Center so I hear in San Francisco specializes in working on older Rolex.

Here is a review of thier service with thier phone number. Good luck.

Tom,

As KanseiVet mentioned, your best bet is the independent RSC in San Francisco. It's certified by Rolex as one of only two non-Rolex owned service centers recognized by Rolex to do "factory warranty work" and issue "factory service warranties" after a complete service. They provide the same level of high quality service of the factory owned RSC (actually better in my opinion) and is more flexible about what they'll do for you in terms of Rolex "rules."

TK, The Independents do great work. I've used the one in Chicago and have also heard great things about San Francisco.

There are some independants on this forum too, I recall a respected watchmaker out of Philly I think?

I have had several "tune-up's" on mine at the S.F. RSC. They have always done good, fast work.

Give a call to some of your area AD's...I'll bet that some of them have a Rolex contracted watchmaker on staff.......

They have to work to Rolex standards and would likely never replace or touch your red dial without consent.......

I'm glad I read this post. I had spoken with the RSC earlier today and they said no problem to a 1680. Then I called back and asked about the RED one, and they said no way, as the dial cannot be replaced in the event anything bad happens. So, I guess I'll send mine off to SF (who said they will do it). I'm going to keep my fingers crossed.

If you have any questions or issues, I suggest you speak to Ludwig Bernecker, who is the proprietor of the SF RSC. He impresses me as a very straightforward person. He will tell you if he can do what you want, if he can probably do what you want but won't guarantee it, or if he can not do what you want and won't even try it.

Yep. The dial falls into the "exotic" catagory. The only replacement available here in the states is a white lumi though a RED lumi dial exists.

SF worked on my 40 year old 1675. No problems.

I can't find a definition of the difference from the 1675, 16750 & the 1680 Red? What is RED about it?

Art,

Ludwig actually retired and left the shop in the hands of Giovanni. Giovanni is just as honest and straightforward as Ludwig. He's an amazing watchmaker (as is the rest of the staff at SF) and always does a great job on my watches.

1675 and 16750 are GMTs. The 1680 is a late 60s-early 70s Sub-Date w. red lettering "Submariner" on the dial that makes the watch a collectors item.

Steve,

Thanks for the update. It will save me from shock the next time I go in!

My neighbors 1968 Rolex GMT stopped in Dec 2009 and he took it to the ad and they sent it to Rolex Dallas and the watch was completly serviced. New tube and crown. Movement repaired case and band polished. Exactly as is described in the factory service book. Got it back Jan 31st 2010 and is happy. It seams that at least in this case Rolex Dallas will service an older watch if this helps any. He has worn the GMT everyday since new in May 1968. He loves his watch.

So, you send your watch from Spain to the US for repair? What do you do about customs? I heard it's illegal to import any Rolex into the US....Am I missing something?

Shouldn't be

If you sent the watch to USA and declare to Spanish customs it's going out and declare to USA customs it's coming in for repair of vintage watch.

When it comes back you'll have to declare the watch as coming back from repair, you'll have to pay the VAT for repair, courier cost and a little fee to the courier for taking care of customs.

But why not sending it to Geneva or Brussels ?

My 1680 Red is currently with Bob Ridley. I would highly recommend him. He is located in Dallas.

His work can be found in numerous threads in the tech and vintage sections.
