Looking to become a watch expert

Hey guys, the title is kind of a joke but I'm looking to learn as much as possible about Rolex, AP, Patek, Omega, and just watches in general. If anyone has any advice for me or can reference me to informational sources that would be great. Thanks!

My tip would be to post and read in those specific watch forums.

Welcome

Just buy a bunch of very expensive watches.

We all know that people who have the most (and most expensive) watches also know the most about watches.

Buy a Patek , take it apart , then rebuild it.

This is how Bas and Jocke learned.

Good luck!

I see you're in New York. That have a great Horological Society https://hs-ny.org/ . Become a member and enjoy their extensive library, chat with other enthusiasts, meet watchmakers, etc.

Enjoy your time

Welcome

98% of what I know about watches comes from either TRF or Tim Mosso.

The same way anyone becomes an expert on anything. Start reading everything you can, learn, and seek out new information.

Good luck.

Just read a few books on the aspect of horology you are interested in. There is the history of watches generally, the evolution of models within the brands, style and design and movement construction, engineering and science. It's not a difficult subject to learn about and become somewhat expert. It might be tough to become an actual watchmaker without the dexterity and vision it requires no matter how well you understand the parts and the engineering.

Let's get started

First there was the sun. And people noticed that if they put a stick in the ground that the shadow would move in a circular pattern, as the sun moved across the sky.
Then it would get dark, and the shadow would disappear.

Come back next week for lesson 2

We used to have a virtual throng of highly knowledgeable members willing to expound on every conceivable nuance of Rolex and other brands. Some are still around, but sadly, many have moved on.
