Gin Thread

Since we have a Whiskey thread and I am a G&T fan, I thought I would start a post on gins. What are your favorites? I like trying different ones and the following ones are currently in the bar at home (ones in bold are standards and the other ones are constantly rotating):

Hendrick's
Hendrick's Orbium
Hendrick's Midsummer Solstice
G&J Greenall's
Fords
Junipero
Goodwyn
Gunpowder
Uncle Val's

What are your favorites?

Sipsmith has been a new favorite. The Botanist and Hendricks are dailys. Gunpowder is awesome especially with the grapefruit. Deaths Door is also excellent but somewhat hard to find for me.

Monkey 47 is my favorite, hands down. Gunpowder and Hendricks are the other staples in my cabinet.

I do like a G&T occasionally during the summer. Since I'm putting tonic into the glass, I don't think I could tell one gin from another. I do have a bottle of Bombay Sapphire at home, but you could pour a glass of that any other gin, and I couldn't tell one from the other.

Martin Millers Westbourne was always outstanding and this thread has made me realise I haven’t had it in ages. Time to remedy that.

And an honourable mention to Fever Tree tonic water wouldn’t be amiss- nothing better that I have found.

I love the Hendricks and it was my only choice until I had the Bloom London Dry....
I believe there will be a fondness for another soon...

Any Gin as long it's made with Juniper berries and your tonic better have quinine in it otherwise you're missing a key ingredient with historical significance let alone the taste improvement.

Someone else at work said to try it. My Budget go to is the G&J Greenfalls where a 1.75l bottle is just under $25 at Total Wine with their buy 6 promo. I used to drink Tanqueray all the time and the G&J is better and cheaper.

Gin that won the best Gin cocktail -- can't remember what year. If you fly Finn Air (business) you will get offered the cocktail - try it.

Big Gin world out there....

Am a big fan of St.George from California, Roku from Japan, Four Pillars (black/orange bottle absolutely fantastic) it’s from Australia. Gin Mare and Hamburg Sul are also great choices. Anyone that like Monkey 47 would love all these. For martini’s - london dry is a must, hence, Tanqueray Ten.

I used to drink a lot of different types of Gyn, Monkey 47 I found to be too peppery, Sipsmith VJPO (Very Juniper over proof) is very nice, as is Hendricks. As Speedy say above, it is recommended with cucumber and well worth trying with it, I don't like cucumber so had a slice of lemon or lime.

Some American Gin's to try are "Deaths Door Gin" (I bought that just for the fabulous name) and Bluecoat Gin from Philadelphia which comes in the most beautiful bottle one has ever seen.

Gin from my own county (Yorkshire) I didnt like at all, it was called Masons Gin and made not far from me.

What is often overlooked is the Tonic used, Fever Tree, in my opinion is by far and away the best, Fentimans has a different taste but is very nice, 1724 is also very good and if one has no Lime or Lemon can handle the Gin without it.

I do urge you to try Fever Tree Tonic though.

Mainly Bombay sapphire or Hendricks for me. I need to try some of the references in this thread, especially the tonic. Didn’t know it’d make that much of a difference.

Tanquery 10 used to be amazing years ago, to my taste it seems they changed the formula when the the bottle style changed. I did a taste test between the two versions of Ten and I could definitely taste a difference.

If you are near Philly burbs then I would check Total Wine....they might also offer delivery to you. Price is great there at under $25 for the 1.75l bottle if you do their promo deal.

Just simple Tanqueray and tonic is one of my go tos. Other ones seem too light, or they added to many fruity notes. That more simple taste of it is perfect for me in a G&T

Hendricks and Gordon’s are two we always have at the bar in the house. (I’m a whisky guy, but sometimes like a change up) Recently a friend introduced us to The Botanist and Uncle Vals Botanical gin — quite good.

Wife and I both really enjoy gin. We purchase all kinds of gins based on weird flavors, fruit flavors, or cool looking bottles.

However, we always have Hendricks and Tanqueray.

I keep Hendricks and Bombay Sapphire plus a few others around. Nothing wrong with basic Tanqueray really. 10 times more Gin & Tonics were ruined by bad Tonic than by having the wrong Gin.

While in Havana, I had a nice conversation with the guy that was a gin maker. The brand was Jensen’s. He was telling me he tried to replicate the taste of the old vintage dry gins. Has anyone ever had it?

The Botanist has been my go to for the last several years. When I’m out with a few of my buddies they always have Uncle Vals.
I may try to track down the Monkey 47.
