Daytona "Winner's Watch" - 24H LeMans und 24H Daytona

The Winner’s Watch as we know it today (the iconic Daytona) began with Rolex’s sponsorship of the 2000 race, if I recall correctly.

In 1999 Bill France Jr. chose to take Grand American racing in that direction after some really lean years in the early ‘90’s. It became the Rolex24 and Rolex provided the watches.

Now it’s very possible there were trophy Rolex watches before then but each year depended upon the receipts from the prior season and GrandAm. Because the 24 hour race is the first one of each new season, they never knew which teams would enter (and entry fees determined purses and awards). So any early watches would’ve been coming out of GrandAm’s pocket.

I actually know and can clarify a number of things.

Rolex didn't get involved in awarding watches until the 90s and awarded those to overall winners only until a few years later.

Paul Newman's teammates were not awarded watches in 1995, so unless that was a special gift from Rolex to him personally (a bit odd that they wouldn't award watches to his teammates), he obtained the Daytona in that photo some other way.

I'm currently in the final weeks of a project about Daytona winners and their watches.

Thanks.

What’s funny is that I ended up here because I interviewed Mr. Elford (for a second time) yesterday.

I think if you won at Daytona you get one. I don't know if this applies still but if you won the duels you received a Rolex. Dale Earnhardt estate brought out a few rolexes for the public to see and on the back it said twin 125 winner. If you win the pole for the Daytona 200 motorcycle race you get a Rolex. If you win he race you also get a Rolex.

Congrats on that win - what an unusual result that I think still stands as only time the GT’s bested the Prototypes.

Ya know what they say - pics?

One would think so, but even the winners had to buy some hard to move pieces in order to get their watch prizes

I don't think he's selling any of his, but each one is very well deserved!
