Despite owning several modern Rolex watches, I had never set foot in an AD until last week. I had a vacation day and stopped by the local "mall for people with money", which always seems to be busiest during working hours. I guess a bunch of other people had the day off too

Anyhow...I walked by the Rolex AD...seemed to be sort of separate but clearly connected to the jeweler next door. They had more filler inserts in the case than watches. A Yachtmaster of some sort was the.only one I recognized. I asked about a Blue Milgauss and we had some small talk about shortages although I didn't express interest in any hard to get stuff. After he warmed up to me he said let me see what we have in the safe, we may have a Milgauss. He came back and said sorry, the Milgauss we have is sold but take a look at this beautiful Air King. That thing is pretty but the dial has way too much going on with all the fonts and colors and such for my taste.

What a great thread! Such fun to sling mud at some of Rolex’s not often talked about low points!

There are models I love, some I blow hot and cold about and then the ones I could not be paid enough to wear.

In order of least liked first: (Ignoring men’s all gold and also jewel encrusted monstrosities).

1. YM2 - no surprised there, a technological marvel wrapped up in the most dreadfully awful exterior - that writing on the bezel, makes me shudder.

2. DSSD - the comic book character of the lineup, so embarrassingly immature that is can only be worn by a child trapped in an adults body. Sorry guys I know some of you love it (there seems to be no way to help you).

3. Hulk - ...it’s just so green, and not even a nice green.

4. Any Professional models on Jubilee. I have tried because the GMT2 was my favourite model but on the Jubilee it is only popular because it is new and different. It does not suit the GMT2 and dropping the Oyster along with the multicolored bezels only has dropped the GMT2 off my want list. It is no longer very subtle or sophisticated. Like some other models, people only venerate it because they are hard to get. The truth is it’s a bit ugly.

5. 41mm DJs. This size is too big and in your face. The dial of 36mm DJ was already similar in size to the 40mm Professional models. 41mm looks unrefined and does not have the same subtlety.

Regarding the Daytona and AK. I never much liked the Daytona, not bad looking, not very useful or practical or special in any way to me. The AK is a classic that has been ruined by the weird and over cluttered dial. Someone was trying to hard to stop it being bland, but they went too far and ruined it.

In the long term, Rolex will eventually damage the aura and legend of the brand if they persist with making most new models for the nouveau riche. When they fall from grace with more refined and stylish sections of society the gauche new money types wont want them anymore either.

Rolex is my favorite brand, but when factoring in the overall catalog, there is a surprisingly limited # of watches/color combinations I actually would wear/buy.

1) 114060
2) Datejust but only with blue, silver or Rhodium dial, lume indices, fluted and jubilee (41 or 36)
4) Daytona, SS, white dial
5) GMT Pepsi or Batman on Jubilee
6) Bluesy
7) Hulk (maybe, maybe not)

Grail watches I love but I'll never have:

1) Daydate yellow gold, black or silver motif dial, lume indices, president (40mm)
2) GMT Pepsi PM with meteor dial
3) Daytona PM on OysterFlex (WG or YG)
4) YM 40 on OysterFlex

I find many to be horrendous but the new AK is above all. Total Failure from the design team. I hope they were fired afterwards.

AK I want to love. It has so much potential but fails for me.

YM isn’t for me, so no love loss there.

For me it's between the AK and the YMII. AK should've been great, but it came out too busy imo. YMII is uselessly huge, all while trying to hide it with lug shape.

If the AK had a lumed 3, 6 and 9 it would go a long way to fixing the aesthetic.

I’d also consider giving it baton hands.

The dial is too busy and sometimes hard to read depending on dial color and lighting conditions. If Paul Newman never wore one, way less people would care about it and it wouldn’t be overpriced. Just my thoughts on why the Daytona doesn’t do anything for me. (Flame suit donned)
Agreed, but I'm sure there are a lot of people who want one for the sole reason that it's popular.

Surprised at the number of Explorer II haters on here. The Explorer may not be my favorite in the lineup but it is far from the worse thing Rolex offers. Seems like a generally inoffensive watch to me?

The YMII is ugly. And I don't care for the Daytona. Too small, no date, illegible and popular due to hype and scarcity.

There are a lot of old schoolers that are probably offended that it's 42mm. I had a polar 42mm for many years and absolutely loved it. Perfect size, perfect dial with the black hands and markers. Very unique within the Rolex lineup, in a good way.

The YMII on the other hand.. Hands down my least favorite. Along with the Cellini, which I wouldn't ever give a second look.
