Which Patek Calatrava Do you Have?Recommend?

Been looking a lot at Patek Calatrava watches for a dress watch, mainly Reference #5117 in gold (not rose gold). Love the looks of this watch & more importantly the exhibition case back.

Anyone own a Calatrava that could give me some wisdom on these watches & which model you would recommend for a starter Calatrava? are older Calatrava models that are manual just as good as the modern pieces! what do these things cost at an AD? are they impossible to get?

I have a Patek Calatrava 5119j (yellow gold). No longer made. Bought it two or three years ago. Not hard to obtain when I bought it. May be harder now that it is discontinued. Super watch!

You or the moderators may want to move this to the Patek subforum.

I am a big fan of having the date on a watch and even the day. But not so much on my dress watches.

Thank you! It was a goal of mine to buy this watch for a long time. Maybe ten years after I first tried one on. I bought it to mark a big birthday/retirement. I am glad I did. We always say you have to maximize opportunities when you get them. We feared ill health, never foresaw a pandemic. If you can afford a Patek, go for it.

When you check the time on your wrist and it says Patek Phillipe, that is a thrill for a watch collector.

I owned the 5127. I’d highly recommend it if you are ok with crown cards on a dress watch.

5107, 5127 or 5296 if you are not into crown guards. 5117 is meh for me, not a fan of roman numerals in general nor the bezel.

I always found the 5296 perfect if you want an automatic movement, date and a display case back, I was surprised when it was discontinued, I have always loved the simplicity of the 5196 and took the plunge December 2019, I’m glad I did it’s perfect, normally easy to get but I did get the last one from the Berry’s group UK in yellow gold.

Not everyone's cup of tea but I like the 5296 sector dial. It's a calatrava with a little bit of flavor.

Just went through this process and chose 5127 because of it's case design and size. 5196 no caseback put me off, and 5107 had a strange bezel, and 5296 doesn't have such a remarkable case. The newer 5227 is spectacular. Just too big on the wrist for me...also feel that dress watches, if they get too big leave too much uninhabited space on their dials on which the 5227 is marginal.

Got a small and minimalist 3998P years ago as the more current Patek dress watches 5196, 5296, and now 5227 wear too large on my wrist. The non-sector 5296 and the 5227 have also got too much empty real estate on the dial for my taste. I like the 5000 and 5096 as well though.

Had the 5119j but tired of it. If prices fall down, could get back in with a 5296r regular dial or a 5196P

As Bill above 5296R in Rose.
Very versatile IMO.

can we throw in the new 5212a weekly calendar into the pot? I would definitely recommend that watch as i love mine! Otherwise a 5196 in platinum is stunning

Ha! Thanks. Yeah, it’s subtle, but it helps to balance the top portion of the dial.

5227

I am partial to the 5227. I think the dial is beautiful, and the hunter case back that displays the beautiful movement is awesome.

Please pardon the crappy cell phone picture.

I really like the simple time only 3119J. This is 34mm but the dial is as large as my day date and it wears larger than its size.

Agreed. I considered the 5296, in both sector and non-sector variants, and the 6000, before deciding on the 5196. I do wish it had a movement fit for the case and a display back, but I love that it’s a manual wind and no-date. The solid gold back looks and feels great. I view the 5196 as a classically-designed modern dress watch.

Also consider the 5227.
