Advice wanted on purchase of 16710 GMT

I currently have only a two watch Rolex collection. I am considering adding a third which would be a 5 digit GMT master with coke bezel. Currently prices are in the 9 thousand dollar range. I would also like to add a speed master moon watch to the collection. Having a explorer II and a submariner already I am not in a huge rush to buy the GMT. With Rolex prices and demand near peak would it make more sense to pull the trigger on the speed master and look for a GMT at a later date after the Rolex market cools down a bit. Or are the earlier GMT's destined to continue to appreciate. I know no one has a crystal ball but any advice would be welcomed and appreciated.

I would expect the 5 digit GMT’s to continue to appreciate. You can still get a full set in mint condition in the 10k range. A guy named “springer” who hangs out on the vintage forum is a pretty good starting point for info.

The new Speedmaster Professionals (classic moon watch) seem to be stuck in the 3-4K range. The tritium versions from the late 90’s are starting to appreciate past that though.

Good luck with your search!

I don't think the 5 digit GMT price will go down at all. The longer you wait, the more you will spend.

Bought my 16710 3 years ago from John (Springer), And prices are still climbing depending on condition! John knows his stuff, and is a great guy to deal with!! There are also others with nice sets out there with great reputations!!

I would purchase now instead of waiting, good target price for complete set under $10k would be good. GL on your search.

Price on the 5-digit GMT will only continue to increase over time. While there may be periods where the price decreases by a few hundred dollars (condition dependent, motivation of seller, etc.), if you’re expecting a decrease of a few thousand dollars - dream on.

My advice: if you find a model that meets all your criteria is to buy it.

I was looking for a 16710 about a year ago and it ranged from $6k to $7 k
Now they’re going for a crazy $10k+!!
I preferred to go with the new Pepsi instead for less money, full 5 year warranty, jubilee, and new movement.
I still admire the 5 digit but not worth the premium for me!

If you think $10k is a lot now, wait till next year...I’ve never seen the prices fall.

Thank you everyone for your thoughts. It does not seem like earlier GMT prices are going to cool off any time soon. I will begin my search after the holidays.
