That song was a guitar epiphany in my youth, which led to a lifetime chasing guitar heroes. A well written lyric is well enough, but nothing rallies the soul like a wailing guitar.

Yes indeed! Their early footage is just flat out insane. How they kept it all together is amazing. Angus is a teetotaler too, which I guess he'd have to be to be able to play like that.

They are touring a little next year, I'm going to make a trip or two to Europe to see them. It could be the last time but it's been the "last time" for every tour of the last 10 years or so.

I play guitar in my own band, and for Americana artist Shane Gamble, I nominate myself!! JUST KIDDING.

My favorite guitarist is Jimmy Herring, of Widespread Panic, Aquarium Rescue Unit, and Jimmy Herring Band fame. Jimmy and Derek Trucks are very close friends and share the stage regularly; Derek is another standout talent!

I just discovered Julian Lage, who has blown my mind with what he has put out over the last 6-7 years, a truly amazing talent!!!! Definitely check him out.

Mateus Asato brings classical style playing to electric guitar, and is sooooo tasteful.

Joe Pass is a legend.

Of course, I think John Mayer's playing and tone are incredible.

Brian Ewald is superb. Whenever he demos PRS products on YouTube, my wallet cries for mercy.

Hendrix was amazing to me but it’s difficult to choose between him and SRV. Love em both.

Lots of good ones on this thread, but I haven’t seen Pat Metheny or Johnny Marr yet. Also Neil Young.

Because his career has touched so many different musical genres, I'll give a shout out to Dave Alvin.

How could I forget Jerry Garcia from my list. Uhh... I'm ashamed.

Just check this out. Very rare moment of genius before his death.

One of the best guitar solos I've ever heard in my life.

the performance shows such subtlety with tiny nuances and control... his 'voicing' is pure perfection.

I gotta add Carlos Santana. I saw him perform from the third row and it was like he was just breathing on the strings and creating magic.

It was so good I almost through my man panties on stage with the others.

Frank sure could pic virtuoso players. You probably know of one of his drummers Terry Bozzio. If you haven’t check him out. Had the pleasure of seeing him play with Frank back in the day.

So many that are so good. My pick already mentioned Steve Howe. Love the complexity.

I keep coming back to Mark Knopfler. His diversity of style and tone is unmatched, I think. Whatever it is, he's got it mastered -- hard rock to jazz trio to mandolin to country to Celtic to cinematic arrangement.... on the same albums, in the same live sets. He has a sixth sense for chord voicing and orchestration, and a truly unparalleled touch on the instrument. And he never overplays the song.

So many good ones already mentioned. I add:

Alex Lifeson
Tom Petty
George Harrison
BB King
Steve Winwood
Robert Cray
Johnny Cash and Johnny's pick for rhythm guitar - Elvis Presley.

In Johnny's autobiography, he said Elvis was a fantastic and very underrated rhythm guitar player with tremendous chops. Those early years at Sun Records really show it off. After his days at Sun, you didn't really hear him much because by then he had his awesome band with him and that's who you mainly hear. There's a lot of great acoustic guitar playing in his '68 comeback special and in the recordings and early performances from 69 to the very early 70s. Then everything got really grand with production and all you hear is his vocals with the band, back up singers, and orchestra.

Of course Terry was one of the only drummers that could possibly accurately play 'Black Page' way before he took on a wife, Dale, and make music in Missing Persons.

let's mention George Duke and of course frank had the Spank Stevie Vai... on multiple occasions.

Prince, I have been fortunate to see him live in Holland and was totally blown away. The Mozart of modern times.

SRV, Texas Flood from the performance at El Mocambo, out of this world.
