Question: 5712 and Watch Winder

I know people have varying opinions on watch winders so I wanted to ask the question specifically related to a 5712. Is a winder safe to use with the 240 movement? Any specific recommendations?

I wear the watch in rotation and am not sure whether its better to keep it wound or to have to regularly reset the moonphase with the pusher so wanted to get people's thoughts.

Thanks in advance.

Just leave it run down and set when you next select it for wearing.
If you find it a hassle, and thereby skipping past it for something else, then you can go down the winder route.

mine is on a winder. Setting the moon phase every time it runs down is a hassle. Im pretty OCD and i need the moon phase to actually be correct so just setting the time and date isnt an option.

If you have a quality winder its no worse for the watch than if you wear it every day.

I use the watch winders on all my watches including the 5712 , I never had any issue , most important is to get a good quality winder , I use the orbita programmable - , set the winding CCW at 800 TPD, this fits with almost all patek watches ..

I keep 2-3 of my dailies on the winder and rest I let them run down until their next rotation.

With moonphases and sometimes dates, I don't bother adjusting them. I just adjust the time, give the crown a few turns, put it on my wrist, and carry on with the day.

Orbita has a database that will instruct you with regard to direction and number of turns per day for your movement

Buben & Zorweg make a great selection of winders.

Or you could go wild.

Too much information, Tyler — far too much!
What you do with your hands in your pockets, standing in the AD's store, is best kept to yourself...and vehemently denied in front of the judge!

My new business venture will be dealing with Döttling and they make one of the most amazing watch winders but it is priced at the elite end of the market (~€19,000)

I’d love one on the office.

what would you say is the lowest price point of a watch that is appropriate for that winder?

Love it, but I think I would need a grand comp first

Very true!

Before initial conversations with them I had in mind the price point being around £12,000 upwards but sadly no it’s £16,500 upwards.

Functionally wasted but a 15407st would look nice on one, but yes really it would need to be something special like a PC/GC

You should be careful selecting a winder. Sometimes the less expensive options use inferior parts and materials. In particular for the 5712 it requires a winder with an error rate of +/- 1 turn per hour otherwise the watch may exhibit uneven power gains due to the number of rotations it receives. Inferior woods like teak will detract from the overall look of the piece which some owners might be concerned about.

I was considering one of the Wolf Roadster models, which appears to be well made with precise turn counting.

Those Buben & Zorweg winders look great....price also reflects that quality.

Orbita makes a great product. I’m partial to the Bellino line.

Not sure I follow, how do you control the amount of winding a 5712 receives when you are wearing it?

yeah i dont follow either.

I utilize my winder similarly as i can to how i would wear the watch. It rests at night and does a winding program during the day. Just like if i wore it daily.

I was just kidding, of course that is a ridiculous idea. I thought it was clear enough by saying that the wood choice in the winder could effect the watch.

I have a cheap winder I bought on Amazon for the cases when I don't feel like resetting a complication.

Joking aside, from using my winder it is clear both my 240 and 324 Patek movement pieces need far more winding than all my other far more complicated pieces from other brands - Patek is unidirectional which clearly halves the effectiveness on the wrist.

I ended up buying a Wolf Roadster and have one question. I have small wrists and even with the small cuffs it’s tight locking the bracelet. Should I be concerned about the cuff stretching my bracelet at all? I would guess the 5712, my DaytonaC and either AP or seadweller will generally be on it.

Any concerns?

I haven't purchased a wolf winder before but for orbita they have different size cuffs and pillows and send them for free to customers ( I have smaller wrists as well)

So I have moved past the question about whether to use a wonder or not but am specifically curious about whether there is any risk of stretching the bracelets as my watches fit but are tight on the pillows (I ordered and am already using the small cuffs).

Would certainly appreciate people’s thoughts. Thanks in advance.
