Spotted this beast on walk back from dinner.

i'm Downunder not in USA so it's rare sight, what can you tell me about it?

Looks midsize for a yanktank, not as huge as a F350 or Suburban/Avalanche.

Badges on sides were taped up but bow tie & Z71 on front unmasked, I'm guessing Chev Silverado?

yeah probably a Colorado by shape of headlights.

They've definitely lost the badges huh.

Most likely Holden testing unit... I don't understand all this car testing coverups, if you're testing some new model meh big deal, few would notice. But plaster all its badges up or worse wrap it in ridiculous camouflage definitely even a blind bat like me would take notice

Towbar looks used & there's an odd red hookup doesn't look like usual trailer lights plug... possibly doing tow stress testing.

How new is this thing, pretty recent? Seems to be 2018 year face.

The numberplate afaik isn't so that new, probably out 12-18mths ago... whereas the truck looks quite fresh. Either they've gotten a unit well ahead of its release or they're sitting on a stack of old plates, or maybe conveniently recycled a plate off another truck, who knows :)

Definitely a Chevy Colorado. The red plug type apparatus on the rear bumper is odd. Appears to be hydraulic?? Maybe a battery disconnect of some type?

came out in 2015 as a 2016 i believe.

that one has a class 5 hitch. might be a diesel with a trailer parked somewhere.

nah, I wouldn't put battery cutouts on rear bumper

That's as bad as putting the fuel tank as rear bumper...! o wait...

Yeah possibly a hydraulic line or electrical hookup, there were some instruments on back seat

if they were doing trailer testing their test trailer usually has some kind of adjustable air brake to make drag at high speeds.

family & friends had already gone on ahead by 50m.

I travel the highways in the Midwest a lot and stop at truck stops and rest stops frequently to fuel up and use the facilities. I love seeing the test mules. Last one was a couple years ago I saw a Chinese version of an Isuzu pickup running around. Finally talked to the driver. Was testing a small Diesel engine for a midsize truck for Cummins.

As far as battery shut offs go that is where they have been on every one of our race cars.

Would not be a private car... as civilians here can't register new/latemodel LHD vehicles. Ergo Any LHD cars on regular plates would belong to car factory.

Holden does sell a Colorado, thought they might source from elsewhere like Thai and the 2012-2017 models look different to this one.

I don’t see any other plugs for trailer lights. It has to have a light plug in. This one might be custom for this truck.

yeah these things seem to find me quite regularly

even when overseas & I'm just minding my own biz in the slow lane commuting between cities... this comes past & I just gotta give chase

there's a round black cover on right of number plate, I'd assume this is the place for standard trailer plug

Red thing looked more like covering a hydraulic snapfit

I think the cover is a popout for some accessory that isn’t on this truck.

I saw a tesla Model E or 3 testing in death valley. it persumably overheated and pulled off the road.

Yep - you nailed it...

It could be the 2019 with hybrid motors and a battery pack (with a charger plug where the spare tire crank normally resides).

It looks like a midnight edition option but without the off-road wheel/tire package.

It could also just be an owner who debadged his grey market imported US-optioned vehicle.
