Open 6/9 Date Wheel

Hi everyone,

I’m doing my research towards buying my first Rolex. One of the things I like most that I’ve seen in vintage Rolex is the open 6/9 date wheel. I really like the font and everything about the way those date windows look.

I’m wondering, has Rolex completely retired those date wheels ? I.e. does one need to look into vintage Rolex to get it or are there modern Rolex that have it?

I’m generally looking at GMT Masters, but generally interested in learning more about this. Any info would be very helpful.

Thanks in advance!

They’re vintage. Rolex doesn’t use open 6 and 9 fonts anymore

Used until early/mid-80s in some models.

I wonder if everything old (vintage) will be new again some day?

In think they were used until early 1990s, as some early 16610 Subs had them.

I like roulette wheels too, in some cases, but not as much as open 6/9 fonts. Modern watches have roulette wheels though!

Yup, and my 1989 (R-Serial) DJ had open 6s and 9s.
