Yes indeed. I view watches as a depreciating asset (although some may hold or increase in value) to be kept a long time. If I want a watch and it is not available from an AD - and if I (subjectively) think the price is fair and affordable - I buy it from a reputable reseller.

Same with cars, boats, whatever. Nothing sacred in MSRP to me, just the market price.

Got my DD40 in 2016 at a good discount.

Got my SD43 in 2017 at a slight discount.

I may consider paying retail for a highly sought after model that I love and have to have but I will not pay retail otherwise.

I don't think (never say never) I would pay over retail for pretty much any reason.

Never have, never will. I can live without it or buy a different brand for what they're asking now.

I bought a YM @msrp and a datejust with 5% discount, both from AD, will never buy over retail from grey, only when it's significantly less than new fron AD

Not so far, CHNR, Sub, DSSD vanilla and JC.

That is not to say I wouldn't in the future but it would more likely be for an out of production piece or something I thought might be pulled in the short term.

Paid well under retail price for a new YM 116622 from a trusted seller, several years ago.

Paid retail for the SD43 at the AD.

I don't think I'll ever pay over retail. Currently waiting for a Pepsi from AD. If they never call me, so be it. I have other pieces in mind, both Rolex and non-Rolex.

Bought a blue 5711a for 32K at the end of 2017. I know, I know. I'm a big loser for not getting at MSRP. Thanks for the reminder!

I’ve lost count of how many watches I’ve bought over the last 35 years, all for MSRP or less save one. An acquaintance at the time had just begun moonlighting as a part-time trusted seller dealing exclusively in SS Daytonas (yes they’ve been in high demand since the early 90’s).
I bought a NIB white dial 16520 in 2000 from him for $7K, MSRP at the time was $5300. A year later the 116520 was out and I wanted one. Sold the 5 digit for $7K to another grey dealer, this time my friend sold me a white dial 6 digit for MSRP of $6200. Then in 2004 he traded me straight up for a NIB black dial 116520 which by then sold for $6975. He made profit by selling my trade in. In 2008 I sold the black for $10K, so basically three Daytonas over 8 years for a net gain of $3800.
Would I ever do it again? No, I have a strong AD connection now and I just don’t crave things as strongly as I used to.

Unlike most I've never bought a watch from and AD at more than MSRP. Both were bought in NH where there is no sales tax. Anyone paying MSRP in a state with sales tax is paying over MSRP.

Never paid a cent over MSRP. Used watches should cost less not more than retail.

Me....and I rather quit with this hobby if it this would be the only option to obtain a Rolex.
It' s my biggest hobby since the age of 26 years (now I am almost 56)
I have a passion for Rolex but at the end of the day it's only...and still... a watch.......

I have limited purchases but they have all been through an AD.

I have not read all of the responses but I wonder who is going to respond and say that I bought all my watches at a 20%+ premium over MSRP? I am sure most want to keep that a secret!
