Who here has never paid a cent over MSRP for a Rolex?

I have bought 4 Rolexes in the past 3 years. 3 for me and 1 for the wife.

Submariner below MSRP (June 2017)
DJ Blue below MSRP (September 2017)
DJ TT Gold below MSRP (December 2017)
BLNR MSRP (October 2019)

So haven’t paid over retail.

If you have bought multiple hard to get pieces and never paid over MSRP, you have probably also bought things I would never buy, jewelry, diamonds, and datejusts...

Of the five I have bought, all have been with a discount. Even my daytona I got with no tax. However going forward I will probably go grey and don’t have a problem paying over msrp, and I do not chastise anyone who has.

Nothing wrong with just not buying in that case, but I also don’t see what the issue is if someone really wants a particular watch and pays the going rate.

I say this as someone who has purchased watches at, below and above MSRP—I’m happy to save the money when I can buy at MSRP or below, but don’t necessarily feel the need to lord that fact over others, or consider myself smarter or more noble than anyone else because of it.

You know, a lot of people think today’s MSRP is an insane price to pay for a rolex too, but I don’t know if that means we need a bunch of “WHO HERE HAS NEVER PAID MORE THAN $6,500 FOR A SUBMARINER” threads.
There is a bit of this, personally as I get older I find time the most precious resource and not wasting it is important, so I often advise setting a time limit to waiting for an AD to come thru for you and then going grey, both within reason. To dismiss ever going grey when you could be waiting five years to never is the crazier thought process to me.

Never. I’ll buy another brand that I can enjoy before I pay over msrp for a Rolex. Call me stubborn.

Can I afford a few grands more on a Rolex? Yes. Would I ever pay that? Never; not for something that amounts to nothing more than jewelry pieces.

To me it's not about affordability, but about the will power to set the boundaries against material temptations. Strong people control things rather than be controlled by things.

what does the MSRP set by rolex have to do with the boundaries you set for yourself?

Do those to numbers just always align by coincidence?

totally agree. and I believe in setting a limit for what price a watch is worth to me as well; just silly to think that that number will align with what a company sets at MSRP all the time. some watches i want and will go over MSRP. others i like but would never pay more than 75% of MSRP...

Never paid a cent over. Have gotten it for less so far except some models. Basically means I haven't bought a watch other than an AD.

I've only got the one Rolex, a GMTc bought at msrp minus tax. $9.8k aud, probably around $7k usd at the time last year.

I'm not completely opposed to paying above msrp but the value prop comes into play, eg paying AP prices for a hot rolex doesn't make sense to me but each to their own

DeepSea JC
SkyD TT White
Yacht Master Blue
2x Submariners for my Grandsons
DJ31mm TT Jubilee,MOP, Diamond IV for my wife

all bought at MSRP from ADs except for the Yacht Master which was bought Grey unworn in stickers and full kit for $1100 less than MSRP.
Would have had a 116508 if Jon Mayer would have kept his opinion to himself!

Frankly I wouldn't enjoy a watch knowing I over paid.

I paid exactly 7.75% over MSRP for my sub. Taxation is theft and all that.
