Thinking of a day date next..

Hi all, hope you are well and safe. I've been starting to plan what's next and been researching a day date. My current collection consists of multiple SS and ready to plan and save for my next piece.

What I've done so far:
- Research the new Day Date 36 and 40
- Try on each to see how it feels.
- Bracelet feels so amazing.
- I love the fluted bezel so much that I have a DJ and Sky. :)

After looking at different configurations, I am gravitating towards the DD40 silver motif or black in YG.

I would like to learn from this amazing group your experiences with your first day date purchase?

- Did you go vintage first or new?
- How was it getting a DD from having SS models?
- Pros/cons of going vintage vs new (other than movement & warranty)?
- With the recent rolex price increase, is it better to get an older DD40 (3-4 years old) as I've seen a 4-5k reduction in price?
- Also seen 1980s models around 10-15k
- anything else

Thanks for your time and I value the knowledge of this group. All the best.

My favorite Day Date is the 36mm yellow gold with classic baton hour markers, Reference 128238. MSRP $33,150.

Just got a 118238 with pyramid dial two weeks ago. It's the most beautiful watch I've ever seen.

Thinking of a day date next..

I went full gold.

The DD40 is so ‘presidential’ that you may as well go all the way.

I also have many SS models but just wanted ‘the ultimate’ as part of my collection for special occasions. Love the weight on my wrist too.

I went for a new DD40 with Champagne sunburst dial and baguette diamonds on the hours.

Many comments from TRF members that if they could buy one they would get the exact same one.

An additional benefit is that I got 12% discount and I got the blue SkyD within a week after that as a bundle.

Amazing, 2 grail watches in one deal plus discount!

You cant go wrong with any era of DD.
From vintage, classic and modern.

If you move from SS try the white gold DD before going to more offensive feeling like everose or yellow

If it was in the budget, I would go for the 40. More gold is higher value down the road

If you want 36 DD. Look at mint 18038 and 18238 and same 20k.

I've had three versions, the 36, DD40, and DD2. For me, the DD40 is the sweet spot.

For me, the sizing of the bracelet is the tricky part. With no micro adjustment in the clasp, it can be a challenge. But, it's truly a great watch and worth the effort.

I loves the silver dial and thought I wanted that but went with the classic champagne dial a few weeks ago.

I wanted something more subtle so I picked up a 36mm white gold 118239. It's not new, nor is it a vintage collectible. The price was a fraction of what a new one would have cost.
I much prefer fluted bezels but I find the platinum reference 118206 with the glacier dial to be very attractive also. My wrist is a flat 7.25" but I think it is a good fit.

I bought my first DD last year. Went with a YG DD40 silver motif dial, traded a handful of other watches from my collection plus some cash. Best purchase decision I’ve made for my collection. To answer some of your questions:

- I went new. The 40 just looked more modern, fit me better, I preferred the new bracelet disappearing end links, the longer power reserve, and I really wanted to be the only owner.

- Took a bit getting used to wearing it vs my SS pieces. For starters it’s a lot heavier. Second, because of the weight, the bright gold, and the thought that it almost cost as much as my car, I was VERY aware it was on my wrist. After about a week tho it feels as natural as my other watches.

- I went gray for mine (DavidSW) and got it new with stickers for about $29k at the time. If I went through an AD then there’s no way in the world I would have paid MSRP.

One other thought: it took me forever to decide on the dial. I wavered on batons vs romans quite a bit, but in the end I decided on the motif dial, which meant batons. Frankly, I’ve still not made up my mind tho. Part of me kind of wishes I had gone with romans and silver dial.

Gotta have a pic!

Stunner John. My personal favorite regarding any DD reference.

I am on the sidelines to pick up one too, preferably with Roman numerals

Classy look. But let’s see if if there are good deals as they should be less resilient in prices compared to professional models

I wouldn’t buy this watch second hand unless is a Vintage. It’s a very special watch in my humble opinion.

- Did you go vintage first or new? New.

- How was it getting a DD from having SS models? Heavier presence on the wrist. Mentally more aware of PM and my situational awareness.

- Pros/cons of going vintage vs new (other than movement & warranty)? New has all the great updates of movements and longer lasting links, etc.

- With the recent rolex price increase, is it better to get an older DD40 (3-4 years old) as I've seen a 4-5k reduction in price? New.

This is what I ended up with but you can’t go wrong with any PM (WG, RG, YG or PL — all amazing) and great dial combos. Buy what sings to you - the one you keep coming back to after looking at the others.
