Smaller submariner?

I’d like to get a new Rolex submariner to replace the Tudor submariner I’ve been wearing for almost 40 years. It did three tours of Vietnam on my father’s wrist starting back in 68. He gave it to me when I passed one of his milestones he thought all young successful men should accomplish.
I’m having a hard time finding anyone to service it anymore, and I think it’s time to not necessarily put it to rest, but maybe give it a break before it falls off my wrist, and I regret possibly losing it in some large body of water.
My local A.D. showed me a new submariner however it’s much bigger/bulkier/taller watch than mine and I have small wrists. She suggested I find an older one before they went to a 41MM.
I would like to get as new as possible, In the smaller 40 mm size.
Anyone know what years that would be off the top of their head?

I believe the Tudor Submariner is smaller and looks almost the same.

The Rolex Submariner that is more noticeably smaller yet still modern enough is the model 14060M (“No Date”) or 16610 (Submariner Date) references, which were made from throughout the 1990s until ~2010/2012.

Here’s a comparison of a current 124060 “No Date” Submariner vs a 16610LV Submariner Date (LV is for the green bezel):

There are many trusted sellers listed on this forum you can reach out to for these models. For this era watch, I recommend considering Jacek at Tropicalwatch.com or Max at MVVwatches.com.

You might also consider the Tudor Pelagos 39 — it’s a very modern watch, fits smaller wrists well, and is a nice homage to the watch your father passed on to you.

There are a lot of great 16610, 14060, and 16600s out there that I’m sure will fit your need much better and are fairly easy to locate a good one.

5 digit Rolexes are the best.

Or try on the Rolex Yacht-Master is available in five different sizes (including the discontinued variants): 42mm, 40mm, 37mm, 35mm, and 29mm.

A five digit Sub would fit the bill as well as a Tudor Pelagos 39. But please spend the money now on a service to preserve your father’s watch. That will bring you more joy over the years than anything else.

Tudor sub is 39mm with an ETA based movement that should be easy to service.

A modern interpretation is going to be the just releases Tudor monochrome 41mm. It's much bigger of course, but so is the Rolex sub and it's much harder and expensive to buy.

I had a 5 digit sub and have a 40mm yachtmaster. They wear the same. Worth a look?

You mentioned trouble in trying to get it serviced. We have plenty of people on here with vintage Tudor subs me included, you should be able to get it serviced with one of the recommended independents. Just as a matter of interest who have you tried to get it looked at?
If all else fails a five digit sub as mentioned earlier would be perfect.

You should be able to get it serviced pretty easily.

I don't think you should get the 40mm sub. Your tudor sub will be more special.

Get it serviced by one of the great independents Stateside and buy a newer 91350 bracelet.

I'd look at a 5 digit Sub, or even look at the Tudor BB58 which is a lot newer and matches the size better of what you're used to.

A 114060 or the newer 124060 would be a huge step up in size.

I’d stick with the Tudor Connection and get a Pelagos 39 or BB58. Also, as others have said, an independent should definitely be able to service your Dad’s watch. You should be able to get an original Tudor bracelet for it from an AD or there are plenty of reasonably priced replica bracelets out there.

I would not switch over to Rolex, I would go look at the current Tudors. Plenty of great models in the Black Bay line-up and at a fraction of the cost of a Rolex. The secondary market is full and you can get either a slightly pre-owned one or a new one at a discount. The Black Bay 58 sounds like the watch for you and you can get it on a bracelet or strap or both. Good luck and let us know what you find.

Yeah, I agree. They wear smaller than the later generations of the Submariner.

Yes vintage, they went out of production in the early '90s. They came with black or blue dial/bezel or black dial silver bezel (like my wives watch) on Jubilee or Oyster, ref 96090.

I was being a bit cheeky posting that.. it's the smallest Sub you can buy.
