2020 line of duty deaths up 103%
US police line of duty deaths at 301, up 103% from 2019. 209 US law enforcement officers succumbed to COVID in 2020.
Godspeed brothers and sisters.

Thanks for sharing. I figured it was bad, but with all the fake news out there its hard to know. But 103% is just disgusting and truly a disgrace towards our law enforcement and our great nation. Thank you from me and my family to all the current and past members of law enforcement in and outside the TRF community.

Sad and not surprising. Basically law enforcement have to be shot at directly before they can engage. Sad state of affairs that this country is siding more and more with criminals instead of law enforcement.
I think we will have soon have a major shortage in LE as who would possibly want to go into that profession with the current state of America. |

In this context, it is extremely hard not to get political, so I won’t. God Bless a all LEOs and first responders. A very sad uptick this year.

If I read the stats correctly, roughly 2/3 of the increase is due to the virus. That's staggering. Any deaths for whatever reason are a tragedy, but that is telling how serious the virus is. |

Are the 209 COVID deaths included in the 301? Or was it 301 LOD deaths + 209 COVID deaths?

2020 line of duty deaths up 103%
IMHO, it’s not political to point out an increase in criminal attacks targeting LEO’s. The Covid numbers are difficult to put into perspective - is it a higher % than general population in US?
Per the FOP, demonization of police is making both communities and law enforcement jobs less safe. Violence targeting police officers is on the rise... Now that could be political if some communities of interest are targeting LEOs as a class with incendiary rhetoric. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro

This is an unfortunate consequence of a harder year and the pandemic.
While I understand that it's not easy to be a LEO, it's not particularly high on the list of most dangerous jobs if loss of life is the metric. It's nowhere near the top. I think that's where some of the pushback on this forum tends to come from. It's not about emotion, it's about numbers and we tend to focus on LEO deaths and no one else. Stay safe everyone. Hoping for a better 2021 for all of us. Sent from my SM-F916U1 using Tapatalk

Sad statistics to see - no doubt that covid has disproportionately affected all front line workers and the other dangers for US LEO are plain to see when any encounter can go sideways real fast.
My brother got vaccinated yesterday, 25% of his crew currently have covid. Hopefully the vaccines still pack the same efficacy against the newer more easily spread mutations.

Very sad for the families, law enforcement, and the country as a whole! I have much to say in response, but I don't want to be the cause of such a great thread being closed. Thanks for posting

God bless all the honest hard working LEOs and first responders and let’s also pray for the families of those who died as a result of police brutality, excessive force, and other blatant and disgusting misconduct.

Curious... Would you consider it political if someone created a thread every time a citizen died as a result of unjustified/excessive force by the police? I certainly think there is a political undertone of such content.

Folks let’s not get off track. This forum isn’t the place to get political. This thread is made to honor the fallen no more no less. I’ve closed my own threads before, don’t make me close this one.

Do you mean after the trial and a conviction? If so, then I wouldn’t see it as political. But if every incident when a citizen died during an incident with LE was reported as “unjustified/excessive force” then it would seem a political undertone exists. Just answering the question - out of respect for the OP and his thread, I won’t comment further on the point I reported from FOP. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro

Here in the USA, it's different in every state. In California where I worked, there are several different models depending on the specific agency. Where I worked at, you could retire at age 50 and depending on the amount to time you'd worked, you could retire at 90% of your highest salary. That model got to be too expensive for most agencies, including the one I worked for, and they've since modified that formula.

Dave, I did my LE career in South Carolina. There is no minimum age requirement. When I started, we paid into the retirement system for 25 years (now it's 29 I believe) and could retire; each additional year would yield a higher retirement percentage. A benefit that I took advantage of was buying retirement time. Essentially, one can give the state a percentage of their salary and purchase years towards retirement. I bought 5 years, 4 of those were military at a reduced rate. I retired with 20 years worked and a 25 year retirement at age 44. My wife did the same and retired at 41 ! The best part is the monthly checks start coming the month one retires, no matter the age.

5493 days until I max out however I can go in 1110 days. Hard to say. I got into this after 11 years in the military so I already had a few miles on. I turned 30 in the academy and I have 14 years in. My agency has had 28 line of duty deaths in that time, 10 due to 9/11 related cancer. 9/11 still destroying lives.
On the good days I think I’ll be able to easily make it 5493 days, on the not so good days I think I’d be crazy to stay 1111. I’m extremely grateful my state allows you to buy back up to three years of military service on the front end. It’s nice to have that time back. |
