Small scratch on sapphire crystal

Hi there,

I recently had my 16710 repaired and noticed a very small scratch on the sapphire crystal after it was returned. It's possible the scratch was there prior to the repair, but I'm not sure. Anyone have any experience buffing out a small scratch like this? I've been quoted $300 to replace the crystal, but I'm not sure if it's worth it. It's pretty small, so maybe I'll stop noticing it, but right now it screams out to me every time I look at it.

Happy summer everyone!

sapphire crystal is not repairable, you can either live with it or replace the whole crystal.

I note scratches and dings on every Watch that has them which will not be getting a new Crystal for precisely this situation.

Did you have the watch repaired Adam or Jay, the service center… Where?

That's too bad. And very disappointing. I wouldn't put it past a tech scratching it during repair. It happens. A number of years ago I sent in my 16710 to RSC Dallas for servicing. I got it back 4 weeks later and after about a day I noticed this reflective glint on the end of the second hand. On closer examination it was a scratch! I took it back to my AD. They told me it could be sent back in but I'd have to pay shipping and ultimately pay for any repair or replacement. And I'd been without my watch for 4 weeks and was looking at weeks longer. I was very disappointed. The AD told me to just have it addressed at the next servicing.

This same thing happened to me but with my BLNR.

I would advise you to replace the crystal because now that you've noticed the mark it will drive you crazy. This is of course assuming that you don't mind replacing parts on your watch.

I had a similar issue and I also noticed it two months after having serviced my watch:

Replacing the crystal is 200€ (incl. service), so I decided to leave it as it is and replace the crystal with the next service.

In you case, the scratch seems to be more visible or noticeable. If you see it daily, I would recommend to replace the crystal (that’s what I would do...).

I'd give it a bit of time and see if it still bothered you and make a decision then.
