Gold Plated Rolex Date?

Has Rolex ever made a gold plated Date model? Is that what the 1550 model is? What years were it made? I sized one today and questioned the authenticity of it at first.

I'll let the vintage experts chime in here, but I believe the 1550s are from the 70s. I believe Rolex called it "gold wrapped" or "gold shelled" rather than "gold plated" and this was commonly seen in the 60s and 70s. In short, yes, it was a thing.

Does the watch have a SS caseback? I think that is usually a sign that it was a gold wrapped model rather than solid gold.

That’s right gold shell over.

It's NOT plated. The gold shell is an actual shell over the stainless. Look at the back and you'll see how the shell comes all the way to the lower edge of the case and lugs. Doesn't wear off like plating. The back is stainless.

The bracelet on this one was worn as if it were plated. Perhaps it wasn't the original bracelet, though.
