Discontinued meaning

Hi all, just been wondering lately.
When ppl say a discontinued model. But its actually the same cosmetically maybe just a Movement upgrades. Or new bracelet.

Honestly do u really categorised that as a discontinued model. Cos to most ppl they are exactly the same watch.

Is it just a marketing scheme the resellers want us to believe so that they can just mark up a "discontinued" item.

Appreciate ur inputs

We are now seeing ‘discontinued’ and ‘upgraded’ models?

If they no longer produce a particular reference number then it is discontinued.

I think in general, if a watch with a particular reference/dial/metal is not anymore produced, then that watch is discontinued.

Take the Dssd James Cameron for example. The Original 1st generation model has been discontinued. Shorter production run than the 16610LV.

Sure theres a 2nd gen model but there will only ever be ONE ‘original’ 1st gen model.

In the watch collecting world especially Rolex this is a big deal.

In the context of the OPs question the Deep Sea 116660 (either dial configuration) has been updated, not discontinued.

The 116710LN has been discontinued as no replacement LN model was released.

LOL

You havent been around long enough (actually you have you must not be so active). There are some crazy people who focus on a tiny font change or a little crown and start calling them mark 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 ..... 20th dials or whatever on MODERN rolex's and start comparing them to 1960s models or Comex mark 1 or 2 dials etc....Its all insanity.

Another example is the BLNR. A movement upgrade and a new bracelet and its supposedly "discontinued" LOL

Its the same effin watch but with a better movement and different bracelet. Anything to make a quick buck these days.

IMO,
Discontinued = GMT II LN (for now)
Upgrade: GMT II BLNR

This.

The 116170BLNR literally is not being produced anymore. Therefore it is discontinued.

The 126710BLNR is a different watch, even if the differences are small.

Think 1969 Camaro vs 1970 Camaro.

So is the 126710BLRO the same watch as the 116710BLNR? My your definition it is.

The new BLNR is a 126710BLRO with a different colored bezel. Not a 116710BLNR with different hands, different dial, different case, different movement, different bracelet. See how silly this sounds?

Discontinued is a watch that isn't produced anymore. You can't buy that model at the AD with the same specs / movement

Disagree. The bracelet and case design along w movement has been changed in the Gen 2 JC Dssd model.

The Gen 1 model JC with all due respect is the original model and the one that collectors will covet in the long run. Had a shorter run than the 16610LV.

Is the 116610lv a new model? Or just an upgrade? I say it's a brand new model. Theres only one 16610LV.

Some good inputs here, it makes me think of cars in their mid lifespan they have “facelift” but i guess some are protecting the pre facelift models by thinking that the discontinued “same” model is worth more etcetc. I respect their opinions

But personally i will think the batman is basically the same thing, it has a facelift. Its hard to justify just a bracelet change/movement u cant even see, makes the pre facelift watch completely a different model..

Or even worse , some think that SD43 mark 1 is discontinued since its the one that launch in 2017 (50th). Sorry im clueless on that one
