Daytona WG Blue Dial ref 116509, is this configuration unique?
Hey guys,
Lately I've been looking at the 116509 more and more. I'm considering approaching my AD to express interest in this piece. But it is my first PM piece. It's a lot of money, but I do want to add a big boy watch to the collection. My hesitation is with how this watch will age. The Blue Dial is beautiful. But I'm wondering if it's ever been done on a daytona before? I know the WG models prior to this were grey. But I'm having troubles tracking down a history of all WG Daytona configurations over time. I want something unique that will age well. I want a collectible. I'm curious to hear your thoughts and advice. Thanks in advance |

Its a great watch! It will age great (aside from the bezel).
I don't think I'd consider it unique however. |

According to the oracle of JM, many years from now we will go wow, geeze, they did white gold with blue dial? incredible! (FWIW, I actually do think it's right)
Platona anniversary I think will age better, but WG Blue will be more rare I think as a guess when all said and done. |

Colored dials are a fad, that changes with the times...

He's asking for investment advice people....
By "age well", he's referring to demand...He wants a "collectible"... |

I bought it so I have a slight bias. That said, I only buy what I like and I’m drawn to timeless items/looks. Blue dials have been made for decades and will never be considered obnoxious. White gold/stainless are a timeless look. Their popularity will ebb and flow but there is a reason they have stood the test of time. I wouldn’t trade this watch for the gold/green version even though it is worth more now because I personally don’t wear yellow gold. If you like it, get it. The red accents on the dial are great and it is a beautiful piece.

Yes it has been done. First the ice blue on the platinum, for the launch of the ceramic Daytona.
Then the WG Daytona got a blue dial in around 2012. This was with the old bezel and printed numerals. It was updated in 2016 to the current config. The previous 509 holds its money at least. No many around, the new one will be phased out eventually but I'm sure Rolex will do many more coloured dials. Its just a thing at the moment. The day dates went through a colour revolution in the 80's. The Datejust hung onto to some. Then its been black, white and silver for the 90's and 00's. Colour exploded again in 2012 and onwards. Nobody really knows what will be collectible in the future, so best to just buy what you like the most now. |

A white gold (or stainless steel) case and bracelet with a blue dial certainly is not unique (or rare or uncommon or collectible), by definition.
I suppose you're asking if the value will increase, and all I can offer you is that Rolex prices historically meet or exceed inflation but do not always exceed other broad and liquid market returns. In the long run. Or even in the past 12 months vs. some market indices. |

It’s my favourite looking Daytona for sure. The one i would buy.
If you really want an increase in value through time though then the ceramic SS is the obvious choice. It’s in much more demand. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

This actually was a unique combo.... Blue 116509 dial installed in pre-ceramic 116519 on an OEM croco strap. Loved that one !!
