I personally wouldn't bother with the headache, I would feel paranoid if I ever travel to an area that's a bit sketchy. If you do, just use a bit of street smarts and don't make yourself a target.
That being said, there are so many of those sketchy areas that are super rich in culture and have fantastic, cheap food. Wouldn't wear any nice watch or clothing going there though. |

Get yourself a beater on Amazon. No sense in taking a chance.
There was a famous saying on this site years ago "The safest place for your watch is on your wrist" but this is a whole 'nother story. |

I wore a Rolex to TJ once. Multiple locals (mostly hotel workers) told me I am crazy to wear that in TJ. It’s definitely more Wild West down there and lots of corruption. I wear Rolex (including YG) all over the world but I choose not to in Mexico.

Nope. You already heard/know it's unsafe and lots of pickpockets and robberies. Why take the risk?

This is where the answer may be, it depends on the Sub you own. The Subs of yesteryear could fly under the radar and no one looked at them. Modern Subs look like jewelry, all flashy and shiny. It’s a tale of two Subs... Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

Subs attract attention. I’ve traveled to Guadalajara with my understated DJ. No problem. The Sub is another matter. Would I travel internationally with my Sub my answer is it depends where but generally not regardless of location. Would I travel to Tijuana or anywhere else in Mexico or Latam with it probably not. Would I go to dangerous neighborhoods where I live with the Sub, no.

Would you wear a Timex M79 that might look like a Sub from two feet out but is worth $279? You might still get mugged for it and risk life or injury. What to wear?!

I have worn fancy watches in many sketchy areas most just think it’s a fake as I often look homeless.

Here is my suggestion.... First, a little background.
I am white, but I lived in Mexico as a teenager, I speak Spanish (pretty) fluently. I live about 20 miles from the boarder with TJ and visit there often. I have never felt threatened, or have been acted upon aggressively. Even so... No, I would not take it. You would probably be fine, but I wear my Seiko when I am down there. Especially if you will be going out around the town, there is no reason to make yourself more of a possible target. Wear a Seiko, take reasonable precautions, and enjoy your visit. |

I use reverse psychology and wear an iced-out Cartier. People think it’s a cheap Michele and leave me alone.

Don’t let a watch interrupt or limit the joy in your life. If it causes anxiety to think about taking it, I’d just leave it and it’ll be there when you get back.

Rubber strap only. Anything that glitters gets the attention of thieves and it isn't unique to Mexico.

I’ve worn mine there a time or two. As a couple others have said just use caution. It’s not overly unsafe, but if you walk around trying to be flashy in Tijuana it probably won’t workout too well. Truth is as long you don’t have a look at me kinda attitude most people don’t really notice or care what you wear on your wrist.

Well I’m going to Cabo in 4 days.
Haven’t decided yet. Not wearing a watch will drive me nuts.

If you're going to swim with sharks then make sure you don't look like bait.
There are a few tough guys that are innocent enough to not heed that advice, but I promise you everyone cries like a baby when they think they're about to get really hurt. These days they probably won't threaten you first, you'll only know you're being mugged when the beating or stabbing starts and then any notion of being tough will evaporate. It's the world we live in. |

OP, I've been to TJ a dozen or more times and I always wear a G-shock or something inexpensive. I've had a couple of murky encounters, had friends pulled over and shaken down by the cops etc. |

lolz. I live just about 20 minutes from the international border and have been to TJ hundreds of times. (I wrote a gringo's dining guide to TJ restaurants in the late 1980s). And the alleged "donkey show", if we're even referring to the same depraved thing, was pure urban myth.

Took my sub to Cabo. Wore it on the resorts, no issues whatsoever. When traveling outside the resort switched to my Frogman.
