Do not go smaller than 44mm. I thought I needed a 42mm because of my tiny 6.0 inch wrists. I bought a 47mm and it works fine:

I would suggest getting something with the 1950 style case like the 372 instead of the big chunky cases found on the base luminor models (can’t remember what they’re called). Additionally, you might want to look into getting a 45mm radiomere.

i would never buy Panerai with 42mm, my choice is always 44mm or 47mm. Panerai watches are meant to be bold and loud :)

PAM 176 is the one to have in your collection. Balanced dial. No date to set if you wear it infrequently. Simple. Titanium.

Another vote for PAM 233. Maybe a PAM 183, if you are looking for quintessential Radiomir.

That’s perfect. I’m also looking at a first panerai and this checks all my boxes. Thanks for suggesting it.

I currently have one and love my 88. But if it was only one forever, I’d say 233. It’s a must for all the right reasons.

The problem now is that I love the watch so much and am looking to add another panerai, this time a Radiomir
That's the problem with the Pam233...it's too good and sucks you deeper into the brand. Be warned :)

233 was and still is my first Panerai bought 8 months ago. Love the dome sapphire crystal and seen a lot of wrist time. I added an 112 just a few days ago. Love the Bettarini case shape and it sits so comfortably on my 16 3/4 wrist. The lure of Panerai is real although i am kinda late to the party as it is not everyone's cup of tea these days.

so much love for the 233. always wanted one but never actually bought one. the case and dome are perfect, but I prefer the simple dials on Panerai.

44 is the sweet spot as well. 47 is for the thick boned. I tried the 372 for a few months but felt it was too large. My wrists are just under 7in.

I would go for the older 000/005 or 111/112 for the quintessential panerai. simple/bold/easy to service.

Is the PAM 233 the “Submariner for Rolex” in terms of quintessential — seems incredibly popular on so many forums?

Was in your same boat and after MUCH research and trying on many Pam models, I landed on the 233 and absolutely love it
The domed sapphire, 8 days, hidden GMT hand, seconds quick set, the display case back are few of many great things about this model!

I have the 312 as I wanted a date but I would agree quintessential is bigger and plain as can be.

Been away from this forum for a long time :-) The ones that come to mind for me are: 000, 111, 005, 177, 176, 112, 233, 372, Fiddy, ...

I have a 000 and 104 from the mid 2000's, still going strong. I like the height of the 104. With the automatic movement the case back is a bit thicker so the watch rides a bit taller, which I like. That model is not quintessential though. My vote is 000, but if I were to buy another today I'd get a 177 or Fiddy/372.
