Next big thing

Hi All

What do you think the next big brand will be out of the microbrands and up and coming.

I don’t know if it’s considered a microbrand or if is up-and-coming or already here, but the brand i have on my radar is Laurent Ferrier.

I keep waiting for a Moser breakout. FUll disclosure I do not own one. The Streamliner is being well received and having a known sport watch could be the catalyst for them. Just my guess.

Next big thing

Habring2

Drool worthy, and a well kept secret (relatively speaking when everything is over exposed)

This brand is on life support -- rounds and rounds of funding - Mr Ferrier owns only a very very small portion of the company at this point. I'd be surprised if they are around in a few years.

I have to agree here - I like what Moser is doing - they are making watchmaking FUN! They come out with these off the wall pieces poking fun at the watch industry and I love it. Their social media presence is also very entertaining. The watches be had for relatively good values on the secondary market.

Wow I did not know that. Thanks for clarifying! So much more to running a business than just the product.

I hope they do make it around for a while. I find their catalogue to be quite nice and would be interested in something down the road.

Let's not wait for the microbrand breakout. There is a reason for them to be microbrands: once you go mainstream, you lose your luster for the most part.

Moser and Habring, for example, are in good places already. They provide unique services for discriminating clients. If they go mainstream, they'll have to generalize their offerings, advertise, enter dubious sponsorships--do you really need a Bond edition of Moser?--or undergo other changes that will alter the brands' DNA. Watch collectors, not the casual Rolex buyers, will not benefit.

There is a reason why these companies picked the strategies and are where they are. Let them be there.

Wow, that's too bad. You're right:
https://www.nytimes.com/2013/11/29/f...ulls-back.html

It's weird for a company that was that small then to have so much public information available about intercompany issues. Not normal and not a good sign.

Lange has been poised for a while to break out. If more people get on board with the Odysseus that will happen.

That article is 7 years old, so it would seem that they survived that turmoil. As a fan of the brand, and potential future customer, I would be interested in finding out more regarding their current financial situation.

Akrivia! Akrivia! And more Akrivia! You can’t get more independent and micro than this with 35 watches a year. Love these dudes.

Just like most business a lot of start up micro brand high end watch companies go bust. I personally would be careful putting my coin in them. Other concerns would be parts availability down the road etc.

I don’t see how Vacheron can stay down for this long, so I’ll say the next big thing is haute horology that is part of the Holy Trinity. I’ve eyed some Patrimony pieces, and they’re top notch.

Good call, Gronefeld is doing very well at the moment and they just announced they are moving into a new bigger manufacturing facility. I love their watches and can’t wait to see what else they have in store.

Bulgari and Moser seem to be the hottest companies right now that aren't already massively huge.

Czapek is flying under the radar but i think it will explode into the scene once the Antarctique starts shipping. That is one hell of a watch with a long waitlist already. I predict is the next Chronometre Bleu

This is a very interesting thread and hopefully get more attention.

So far, the prospective brands mentioned are solid. I wonder if brands like JLC, Glashutte Original, IWC and Panerai have an opportunity to lure those who are sick and tired of the waitlists and exorbitant markups.

For that too happen they would need to become the next hot item, which in term would create waitlists and exorbitant markups.

They really are what they say. I love Panerai too, and Rolex, and Omega... yet the Octo is wonderfully different in all the right ways (and the movement is very, VERY impressive too).
