Rolex 6610 'Swiss' Circa 1958
Hi guys and girls!
Can I please have your opinions on this, ASAP, as I'm considering making a £5,500 offer. Price quoted at £5,995. Does the patina look 'nice'? (Probably a stupid question, but hey! TIA

For some reason, the forum wouldn't let me attach 3 pictures!
Here's the third.

I would say that is a refinished dial and it is stated as such.
Hence the price. |

The lugs look super thin. The spring bars are sticking out and the length is short. Hardly "Mint condition, considering its age".

It looks like the watch is fitted with incorrect spring bars. Correct Explorer bars have short pivots for the thinner lugs. The lugs on these were somewhat thinner than say a Submariner, but yes these lugs have seen some polish but perhaps not overly so.

I don't believe all the hands are original. The hour and minute hand look too bright and the second hand is too short.

The sweep hand might be dodgy but ...
[QUOTE=waspy1;6915186]I don't believe all the hands are original. The hour and minute hand look too bright and the second hand is too short.
I'm thinking that ideally the tip of the minute and sweep hands will nicely meet the chapter ring on a 6610 but Rolex is Rolex. Sixty years down the track we see a mix of lengths and a similar mix of gilt hands and silver hands. Might be a few Sub hands creeping in or perhaps that's how the watches were produced. Same goes with the ratio of big bubble sweeps to small bubble sweeps, seems to be 50/50 again on 6610s. I sold this bit of chocolate loveliness a couple of months back (first pic) and I'm thinking the hands were AOK original. Certainly looks good when tips touch the chapter ring but I'd probably accept shorter hands as ok on a 6610. And with regards to seemingly excessive brightness of old gilt. It certainly occurs. Fading and oxidising is common but some gilt hands survive well. The 2940 I'm playing with today (second pic) has original gilt daggers that are as bright as a pin |
