I would recommend "Devils guard", a story about some SS soldiers that escaped after the second world war to fight (As a battalion) in Indochina (Vietnam) for the French Foreign Legion.

I forget the name of the other book that deals with the same subject but a bunch of ex-German SS soldiers were in Korea and Vietnam as well. At that point they didn't have a care in the world and didn't exactly follow the Geneva convention. They did things like strapping captured Vietcong to the outside of their trucks so they could drive through the jungle without getting ambushed by snipers. They would bury prisoners up to their necks in a field and play soccer around them to loosen their tongues. They were some sick MF'ers!

I am a mystery fan so James Lee Burke, Michael Connolly and Robert Parker are all favourites. I also like the early Reacher novels. Anything that is fun and a light read.

I recently read a very interesting biography of Charles Darwin, The Reluctant Mr. Darwin: In Intimate Portrait of Charles Darwin and the Making of his Theory of Evolution by David Quammen. I am currently reading an old murder mystery, The Postman Always Rings Twice by James M. Cain. I am an avid reader, so I'm very excited to find this thread.

I've never really got into the crime/detective genre. I read all the Dick Francis books as a kid and I did enjoy Thomas Harris (all except "Hannibal"...drivel!). I'm thinking about starting on the Wallander novels, though, since I watched a few episodes of the TV version and enjoyed them.

Dave, a the OC of the Training Wing at Redford actually recommended Devils Brigade to me last year but I ended up looking at "THE Devils Brigade" by mistake and I didn't buy it... I'll get back onto it.

Too many books, not enough time! TRF has fairly bitten into my reading and I take twice as long to finish a book now!

Guilty pleasure...the Taschen coffee-table book "The James Bond Archives", a chapter here and there to relax.

Went on sale after Christmas. This edition actually has a clip of film (1/2 second screen time) from "Dr. No" in the front sleeve...the "gypsy camp fight' in my case.

Reading lots of things, but this is worth having for you Bond movie fans, and is a lot cheaper now than when it came out.

...and I thought I was the only one who felt this way. Especially after all the buzz. I'm reading Ann Rules' latest, "Don't Look Behind You". Great thread, Mark.

The gypsy camp fight was in From Russia With Love.

In this topic, I'm always ready to recommend the classic three wwII books by Cornelius Ryan: longest day. A bridge too far and the last battle..

Right now I'm starting:

I seldom get to read for pleasure anymore. Seems all I read is technical, career related or personal, researching interesting stuff.

Just read "Gulp", by Mary Roach. Nowhere near as good as "Stiff". (Which is about cadavers.) This one is just as weird, if you like that sort of thing!

Just finished Bobby Knight's "The Power of Negative thinking". Wasn't a great read, but it is a good "plan for the worst" thought process book. Best part are his thoughts on quotes!!

A good one: "Mom said you can be anything you want. - mom was wrong. Certain mental and physical limitations will limit what you can do."

"There is no use in crying over spilled milk. - but I feel a little yelling may prevent the reoccurance."

"Anyone who is a good loser, has had too much practice at it."
