Tudor 9420/94200 - seeking opinions

Hi

First post here on TRF

I am contemplating the purchase of a Tudor Big Block. Seller states it to be a 94200, but I am pretty certain that it is in fact a 9420 (from old ad for the same watch). It was originally sold in 1982.

The reason for posting is that I find a couple of anomalies (from what I can gather) and am hoping to get some input from the very knowledgable people here.

Obviously, the bezel on this watch is not in the best condition, and also the lume at 10 o'clock appears slightly damaged. This, however, I can live with. The bezel, even though hard to find, could be changed, at least.

My main concern is the hands.

I have never seen a 9420(or 94200 for that matter) with this dial and this type of chronograph seconds hand. As you can see, it is straight and not the "arrow"-style. The only instance I have managed to find on the internet is a Monte Carlo 9420 on R. Marons web page...

Also, the hands on the sub dials all appear to be the thicker type which seem consistent with the exotic type MC dial.

Does this raise concerns?

Any input is greatly appreciated.

I would agree with your concerns about the chrono and subdial hands, never seen those before. Another would be the size of the date, the font seems a bit large.

Thank you so much for your reply, Dan.

I found this in a post on VRF: "AFAIK the earlier 94XX/X series of Tudor Chronographs could also be featured with the so called "Monte Carlo" variants of three register dials".

However, the serial on this watch is a low 990,xxx, which, as far as I can gather, doesn't make it an early series.

The hands on the sub dials do, in my opinion, look like those found on this exotic dialed 9421/0 of which I have borrowed a picture from TudorCollector.

The ad from when this watch was previously sold, states that hands, dial and date wheel are all original. The watch comes with box and papers.

Here is another picture of the watch. Do you still think the date wheel looks wrong?

The date font still looks too thick to me.

Thanks again for your reply! After having looked at pictures of other watches online, I tend to concur.

Perhaps best to walk away.

Had it only been a good one!

Thanks for your reply, offrdmania.

I'll have to decide if these things are deal breakers. Thanks for all your input!
