Thoughts on this 1680 Red Sub

Dear fellow members,

This is my first post on this forum and the beginning of my journey for vintage rolex. Recently i come across the opportunity to purchase the 1680 Red Submariner. At the price around $15000 looking at the shape and condition, is that a good buy? And any thought about the "rust" on the basel, can that be cleaned? Because that's the only part that turn me off.

The watch didnt come with original box and paper. Anything that i have to look out carefully before purchasing? Any inputs are greatly appreciated

Before you spend a penny, make sure that whatever vintage watch you buy is authentic. There are so many fakes and partial fakes [frankenwatches] floating around these days. The next thing is make sure you do the transaction in person or in a way that you are protected. Paying by wire offers no protection.

Im not a huge fan of this one. Everything is over polished in my opinion and there are far better examples in that price range.

My thoughts on the 1680. First off, it looks completely authentic to me. Perhaps the seller can provide a recent Rolex service card. I understand that a RSC will not service a watch unless its 100% authentic. That gave me some peace of mind when purchasing my 1680. Another tip is to remember you're also buying the seller. A bit of due diligence there can help.

I'm not an expert on 1680s, so I'll leave observations on the condition to others with much better knowledge. I wanted to pass on a couple of tips that helped me when I purchased my Mark V 1680.

I believe this is an authentic mk4 dial but the rust is a off put for me to be fair at $15k

I'm not an expert in Subs at all, but let me just say bravo to you sir. Your first vintage Rolex and you go right for the red Sub, good work.

I'd say....case doesn't look bad, the rest can be cleaned up. I agree with others...make sure it's authentic first. (buy the seller first) if everything checks out, I'd say the price is on the high side for a Red Sub without box & papers. So definitely some room for negotiation...especially if YOU'RE going to have to do the 'clean up work'
