Poor Timekeeping + Hair on dial following RSC Kent

Hello everyone,

Last month I picked up my vintage 1972 Datejust fresh from RSC Kent. I've noticed the following issues, and I'd love to get some thoughts.

Firstly, a mystery hair has appeared on the dial. It's tiny, but it's just within the cyclops, so it's huge whenever I look at the date. Now, I did get my haircut recently with the watch on, but how does a hair get into the dial? Surely that's a sign of the watch not being sealed correctly - am I right?

Secondly, and someone with more knowledge can help here, is the time keeping. I've been using the Toolwatch app for Android. Some days, on the wrist, time keeping is between +50 and +120 seconds. Other days, particularly when left dial side up over night, it goes back to between +5 and +30 seconds a day. Is this a sign that RSC didn't regulate the watch for different positions?

In any case, I plan to visit my AD to get the hair removed.

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated

Forget the timekeeping app; use something like time.gov for better results.

As for the hair... !

I believe the app pulls from that site, but I'm not sure to be honest.

Visited the AD. They were just as perplexed as I was. Gone straight back to RSC Kent. Sadly, i was quoted 3-4 weeks to sort it out. I'm hoping they might give me the timegrapher readings too, but I doubt it somehow.

Thanks for your comment.

Hi, I've just registered having had a good wander through the forum and liked it, not sure what I can contribute though.
The reference to RSC Kent took me back to the 70's, when I used to be able to personally deliver or collect my own or my wife's watch. Her's was asked to be returned when I reported slight steaming up inside and mine for a service and a new bracelet.
I bought the watch in 1973 and got a 20% discount, it cost £138.00! It's a straight second hand Explorer 2.
Can you still deal direct with RSC Kent or do you have to go through a dealer now. Being too far away from Kent, my wife's watch went for service through a dealer in Milto Keynes.

Hi........yes you can still deal direct with the RSC in Kent or at Rolex St James. I personally prefer to deal direct rather than going through an AD, as all communication is then with you but that's easier said than done if you live too far away. Glad they have your watch to sort out, posts some pics when you have it back

Hi Steve, my watch isn't with RSC yet, I suspect it's going to cost around £1,000 to refurbish, it needs a new bracelet too. I've worn it pretty well every day since 1973 (45 years) and it hasn't been serviced for a long time. I recently found out that it was quite a rare model and I couldn't believe some of the asking prices.

Sorry i typed at the end of a long-day. If the explorer is the one in your avatar then you have a beauty that will need careful and sympathetic servicing that keeps it as original as possible. Whilst the UK RSC is far more sympathetic to vintage servicing than it used to be, you may well be better off sending it to an independent vintage specialist. If you have the original bracelet you should have it restored rather than replaced with a new service one. If you can get to 10 posts then post up some photo's for those who are experts to have a look at. I'm sure others will come in with suggested UK vintage specialists for the service.

Thanks for the information. I'll wait as you suggest. In the meantime, I have a puzzle that I'd like to resolve with an old LeCoultre pocket watch.
The thread will appear in the "Watches (Non-Rolex) Forum".
