Rolex dial replacement question

Hi everyone,

I've been enjoying reading this forum for a while, but I have a rather (probably) stupid question.

If one gets a dial replacement (from Rolex), I realize that this obviously changes the value of the watch (negatively). But I was wondering, would Rolex furnish a dial with red lettering (but no tritium, matte finish, etc. obviously) if the original one to be replaced had red lettering. Or are those details also lost with official replacement dials?

Thanks

A replacement dial may not devalue a watch, depends on the watch.

If you are talking early Sub Dates, Rolex will no longer put a red-letter dial in, even if it was an original Red Sub.

Wait..didn’t someone on the forum just have this exact thing done recently? He had to be very persistent with RSC NY, which initially told him he would get a white font dial. Anyone remember this thread?

RSC might give you a luminova service red dial if you’re extremely lucky—not the same as a period correct tritium dial.

Thanks for the quick responses and info. I've been leaning towards looking for a 16800, which I believe never had red lettering, but as I'm more into the "use it like a modern watch" crowd, I'd want to get it properly serviced.

So why your question about red letters?

I would imagine that a Matte dial for a 16800 would be replaced by a gloss dial with wg lume surrounds. This would hurt the value somewhat.

Mark020, it's between that and a 1680, hence the question. But I wanted to make sure about how dial replacements work before contacting some of the suggested vintage dealers (based on a previous sticky thread on this forum).

spoilsofwar01, no pics yet. I'm still trying to figure out which one to hunt for (based on pics/threads on this forum, ebay, vintage dealer sites, etc.), before contacting some of the suggested dealers that forum participants have used in the past.

Thanks everyone else for the info, I'll be sure to keep the dial options in mind, and read the link as well.

I remember that one. I think he had to have it send all the way to Geneva for Rolex to certify that it was a genuine red sub before they would put the red service dial in.
