Are the wheels falling off...

...vintage auction prices?

5512 with Explorer dial just sold at Antiquorum watch auction in Geneva for 67,000 CHF (about the same in USD). Pre-auction estimate was 80,000 - 140,000 CHF.

Previous examples of these have sold in the $200,000 range...

I think it’s just that example... I’m no pro but I’d be wary of that one.

Do you wish to elaborate?

I watched the auction for about an hour and there were only 4 Internet bids the whole time so I think something went seriously amiss...

Antiquorum is known to have questionsble items. You need to know your stuff in order to bid there.

Yes but...

1. Phillips is the most hyped watch auction house in the world right now.
2. That 5513 was extra special. PCG, exclamation mark dial and one of the earliest serial numbers ever seen on a 5513.

Normally objects go to Phillips, Christies and Sothebys. When they end up at AQ you pretty much know they were declined by the big houses. Last auction season AQ sold a lot of Rinaldi fakes and I wouldn’t dare to bid there unless I was absolutely certain on the items. Weak results like this show that the quality probably wasn’t great.

That said I think prices are stabilizing in general if we disregard super rare pieces.

What's with the T < 25, hyphens and SWISS at the base of the dial? Photoshop errors or is blatant misprinting common on these dials?

Whats with the lollipop seconds hand 1963? I think there was a reason for the soft result. If the dial was AOK it would have fetched much, much more.

Good point. Lots of red flags on this one. The wheels are still rolling but this particular wagon seems to have a couple broken axles.

It's also odd that they left hands on top of dial print. Sure, 10:12 looks good but it covers up features that collectors need to see.

I read that someone listed a stolen watch at AQ. The watch was identified by the original owner and instead of holding the watch, the watch was returned to the consignor and owner never saw the watch again. Buying at AQ is risky.

Let's hope the wheels are falling off so that we can afford something again!

This is the right answer! Everything has gotten ridiculous. It will plummet at some point, and I’m looking forward to being able to pay reasonable prices. Sorry for anyone who is getting in at the height...it’s like the housing crash in 2008.

I feel the same way about AQ; it's where nice watches with major problems go. I don't even look at their auctions.

Let’s not hold our breathes. The curve may flatten but I don’t see the price dropping.

Christie’s held their big watch auction overnight and most of the Rolexes (even the Photoshopped ones) smashed estimates, so I guess it’s only Antiquorum that are struggling.

Words of wisdom. But even those big three auction houses have their issues. Buyers always, always need to be responsible for making sure the watch is 100 percent correct/authentic.
