Emmm, yes, you have a point, if that was the case and depends on the deal and the condition of the 1680 he traded in as well .... not trying to argue with you here, but it is much much much better than "Aftermarket parts" or parts that dont belong to the watch, or a fake dial etc... If he does know much about vintage watches, i say he got lucky. atleast the watch is legit. I personally, would be happy with the comments of the experienced guys here. "Now I know, what I have".
Besides all, we are talking about accessories here.

Thank you John for pointing this out.

A replacement crystal, replacement date wheel and a replacement winding crown are not “accessories.”

What Im trying to say to say is, he got the major things right, (Case , dial, hands and certificate)..... the rest can be easily sourced. I would factor these "service parts" in negotiating the price but it would not put me off the purchase or make me feel cheated unless the seller knew about it.

The only Rolex I can think for the year of my birth...Bubbleback or a hand winding chronograph.

Beautiful red sub! I would enjoy it as is and not change a thing!

But if it really bothers you...make some changes at the next service. Personally, I would only change the crystal and crown and maybe date wheel. You can slowly source the parts... I would look for the straight sided top hat crystal, which I think some RSC’s have, but you may have to source privately. As for the crown, what do experts think? Is 703 the period correct crown? What crown is there now? 704? And would a 703 fit on a 704 tube?

These are all visual changes that you can see on the wrist. You have the original guarantee paper...so f#ck the boxes and booklets...when they used to be $20 on eBay, fine...but at $600-1000, no way., esp when anyone can get them for their pieces. You already have the main characteristics that would make me a top dollar buyer: strong case, dial, and unique serial number genuine papers.

Glad that fellow collectors share my joy!!!

Yes, if anything, most like will just change the crown and crystal. I will also like some visual on how the correct crown and crystal look like. If convenient, can someone help pm me the reasonable price/reliable source for these 2 items? Thank you.

Let the experts chime in on the exact crown...and whether you need a crown tube also, but a 703 crown should be about $100 on private market, a watchmaker may be able to get it cheaper. The top hat crystal (I think number 127) should also be around 100-200, but again, let the experts chime in. Not sure if it’s correct, but I particularly like the small bevel crystal that give the appearance of looking taller.

So, not expensive, and gives you something else to chase...as that’s the most fun in collecting.

Thank you for the advice. Seems like reasonable prices. While at it, I might buy a 1665 crystal as well. Assuming it will fit.
