I recently picked up a 2008 M Serial GMT Master ii in a face to face transaction. I brought the watch to an AD near me before I paid for it and it checked out. The watchmaker said it was authentic and a 3185. I specifically asked if it was a 3186 and he said "if it was it would be a franken watch" That comment made me question his judgement and everything I've read says it should be the 3186 movement. I'm bringing it back to have it opened so I can see and take a few pics. What are the odds he was wrong and its a 3186? Any thoughts?

My first thought is, why would you post this at all without any pictures? My second though is, I doubt anyone here is going to say anything at all about their thoughts without pictures.

The late 16710 had a 3186 and are transitional pieces. They also fetch a pretty nice premium here on TRF

The 3186 has a different gear system for the jump hand.

Pull out the stem to jump and rotate it a full 360 degrees. A 3186 will "jump" 8 hours while a 3185 will only jump 5 hours.

If it is indeed an 'M' with a 3185 movement then it is rarer than a 'M' with a 3186.

Im not sure if all M serial gmt have the 3186. I read somewhere that it is just likely to have the movement compared to the V serial which is guaranteed to have the 3186. It's still a great and iconic watch though regardless of it having the 3185/86.

Can you give me a link to a 16710 with a 'V' serial?

I have seen only most late 'Z's and all 'M's with a 3186 movement and my M3***** has one.

I have not read another post where an 'M' 16710 has a 3185 but I'm now sure there are some.

Im sorry for the misquote. The thread did refer to 3185/86 movements but for EXPLORER 2 and not the GMT. Here's the thread:

So what does this mean, then? More valuable than an M with 3186? It's definitely the 3185 movement. Serial numbers and model line up with Rolex.

Were you able to verify the watch with RSC?

IMHO, an M 3186 is still valuable vis-a-vis M 3185 precisely because of the upgraded parts.

Hello , I have a z48 ,2007 ,16710 with a 3186 movement , Ive seen 2006 z77 ,with 3185 movement , now here's a m series with a 3185 movement , just goes to show Rolex are a funny bunch and nothing is predictable ,yes you probably have a very rare watch , but I'm sure someone's going to right it off. Enjoy
