A very brief exchange

I went to the watch maintenance section of a large and respected department store in Tokyo today to get my 5512 pressure-tested. The conversation went thus:

Me: Can you pressure test this? [Hands watch over]

"Watchmaker": [Looks carefully at watch] I think so. Would you also like the battery changed?

Me: Never mind. [Takes watch back and leaves.]

Aaand scene.

'Large and respected department store' doesn't equate to staff in watch dept. knowing Jack $hi7 about mechanical watches, obviously! Take it to someone old.

Imagine the look on his face if he did open the watch and couldn't find the battery...

I went into Tourneau with my GMT to get the bezel loosened/oiled (it was hard to turn) and was informed by the guy behind the counter at repairs that it must be broken because the bezel should only turn one direction.

That is not surprising to me at all. I went to a Rolex AD and the watchmaker there told me that my 1665 had an aftermarket crystal as it should be flat and that my bezel was broken as it turned both ways.

Just recently went to an AD and wanted an acrylic crystal changed on my 70s datejust and they told me my crystal was generic because it didnt have the rolex emblem on it. I had to kindly tell them the truth.

It's not different from buying any other major "appliance" like a car or oil painting. Chances are the enthusiast will know more than the salesperson. Not everyone brings full enthusiasm and attention to their paying gig: I have been guilty of this myself. But I have never, ever, turned down an opportunity to learn from a consumer.

I am not surprised, and get asked this question every time I take my watch to this high end jewelry store to be pressure tested.... I always just smile and say NO and they pressure test in no problem.

Most of these places don't have people just asking for a pressure test alone... That IMHO is a WIS thing.

Interesting. I hadn't considered this, but now you mention it you're probably right.

I wonder how much it would cost to buy your own pressure tester...

I have always wanted my own pressure tester also, so I am very curious to hear the answer.
