This seems the place to repost the GMT left to me by a very close friend. A 1959 model with S/N 50xxxx. It appears the dial and hand are later additions, but my ignorance makes me wonder if the more knowledgeable have any comments on it.

I’ve often slated the modern offerings from Rolex in favour of vintage pieces, but just looking at some of these watches makes me realise just how ‘new’ they must have looked in the late 50’s!

I mean, anyone on the street wouldn’t know you’d not bought some of them last week looking st the styling and colours.

Incredible really just how they’ve stood the test of time.

I love my old Seiko’s and have a collection from the late 60’s and mid 70’s and they all look older styling compared to a late 50’s Pepsi gmt and yet they’re 20 years newer in some respects. Amazing I think.

Nobody seems to have mentioned the ultra rare Tiffany, radial, blueberry, all red hand 1675... is there a reason for this?

Some absolutely stunning watches in this thread - the earlier GMT's are probably my favourite of all the Rolex watches. Here's mine - would like to get a really good period bezel insert one day, and a correct bracelet, but I still love it anyway.

My choice for this thread is the 16700. Same thinking as Springer here:

1)Last of the GMT Masters

2)Relatively few were sold (1989-1999)

3)Quickset date

4)Sapphire crystal

5)3 choices of bezel (Pepsi, Coke & Black)

6)2 choices of bracelet (Jubilee & Oyster)

7)2 Dial variants (Tritium & Luminova)

8)Practical as a daily wearer

9)Today priced similar to a current new GMT2

I went for one of the first one’s made. An R serial made in 1988 for the 1989 launch. Have aquired all the bezel options.…..just need a jubilee bracelet now! Having original papers is the ideal for many, but I have 2 RSC service papers instead and it is still under warranty, so this gives a newbie like me piece of mind in an area that can be a minefield for the inexperienced.

These early 16700s (R & L serial I believe) came with the open 6 & 9 date wheel, which is a feature I enjoy

Good points. Definitely the GMT I is my most favourite too and I like the date quick set function which easier to change the date than 16710.

I don't think the 16700 came with the Coke bezel option, although one from the 16710 would probably fit.

The 16700 is also my pick, being the last of the GMT-Masters as you said. Personally I don't like the independant hour hand of the newer references especially when setting the date.

Having said that, purely from an aestethic point of view, the 1675 & 16750 matte dials are the most gorgeous, IMHO.

More value - no. It's just the first generation of the luminova dials.

A few dealers/sellers have been hyping this SWISS marked dial for the past couple of years, hoping the newbies would bite but buyers didn't fall for the hype.

Regarding whether to keep it as a "collectible" - maybe, but your guess as to whether it is a future collectible is as good as anyone else's determination as to whether that model or any other watch will become more collectible in the future.

The original, and perfectly matching Bakelite naps in the safe, while this one can take its day to day licks. It’s actually a perfect aftermarket for daily wearing. Another plus is that under UV it matches the dial and hands perfectly. Now one thing I wouldn’t do, is wear the original Bakelite. They are super fragile and delicate and not worth risking injury.

Waspy, your GMT is gorgeous btw! Lovely piece.

GMTs in my opinion are gorgeous and perfect for the wrist. They sit lower in profile and are not big and bulky like some subs, although I love no CG subs 6536/1 and 5508s as well as early 5512/5513 gilts too. Well and 1680 reds and non reds, god I love em all to be honest. Lol. Vintage sports models just carry a swag about them. They are not for everyone, but when you see one on someone’s wrist ( I am a habitual wrist stalker) then you know that person has taste :D and you can’t help but to stop and spark up a convo.

Quick edit, for those who would like to see the original Bakelite, which was birth with this watch

GMTs and becoming more and more popular and the market price is clearly reflecting that.

Awesome thread!

Happy ‘18 folks

E

Love it.

Wish they would have done this to the new BLNR like the tudor Pelagos bezel.

Since the 6542, the GMT had never been "fully" functional, what good is a luminous GMT hand when you can't see the bezel??

Who makes that insert? Any idea if it can be fitted to a 1675? They could sell a ton for 1675s and 16710s..

Totally agree. Especially with a luminova "tritium" dial

I also went for a 16700 for most of these reason. I specifically went for one with tritium as the one I have is slightly going yellow. The only bummer is my case is a little polished and lost its chamfers but its something I can live with.
