Are you a “watch collector”?

Fun Rolex video from Andrew and Tom from watchfinder.

Watch collecting has become dramatic to the point videos like these are being produced. Buy what you want, collect what you want, wear what you want. It’s such a simple concept.

I would think if you own more than one watch, you qualify as a collector.

If you have 3 kids, are you a collector?

If you have had a number of wives are you a collector?

If you have more than one car, are you a collector?

If you have 8 coffee cups are you a collector?

If you have 30 employees, are you a collector?

If you order a dozen donuts, are you a collector?

If you have 2 dogs, are you a collector?

I don't know the answer to these earth shattering questions but just asking.

If I asked more than one question, am I a collector?

I would probably argue that a COLLECTOR or to COLLECT something is a deliberate act. Something you set out to do. To accumulate something without a plan, is really not collecting because collecting is deliberate. In watches you may start out accumulating over a period of time, but until you mentally have a plan, it's just an accumulation. I have 10 watches now plus maybe 10 I rarely wear, but I don't consider it a collection because I just accumulated watches I liked with no plan or strategy.

So for me, I'm just a person who loves various watches. To me collecting is strategic. I've got this.....and I need this..... etc etc

So, I only collect Rolex and Tudor at this point. Often, people don't classify modern Rolex owners as collectors due to the hype beast crowd that has zero clue about the nuances of watches.

I am a collector as I am interested in their history and mechanical aspects. I am drawn to modern Rolex due to its clean design and durability. I always say Rolex has the Apple design philosophy. I am open to other brands, such as Zenith and Patek. However, watches are on the back burner due to other financial commitments.

I used to collect wives but after a few ex wives it became less fun.

That’s pretty much where I land on it as well.

I’ve never considered my self a collector of watches, more of a hobbyist I guess

We are free to call ourselves whatever we want (collector, enthusiast or hobbyist). Having more than one watch puts you in this category.

I am not a collector, nor an enthusiast in my view. I don’t think it is a hobby either. I just like Rolexes and I own a few I wear regularly.

I agree with this, so I guess that I'm just an enthusiast, which is okay by me.

I'm pretty much a slave to pop culture.
Omega - James Bond, Cindy Crawford,
Rolex - James Bond, Miami Vice, Roger Moore, Daniel Craig, Wimbledon !
IWC - Top Gun
Dunhill - Cars
Tag Heuer - F1 Timing sponsor
Bretling - Aeronautical

Anyway that's my puerile connections

Collecting is a verb, it denotes action.
If you are not constantly in the pursuit of another watch, you are not collecting, therefore not a "collector".

Thank you for sharing the link. This is no dig at you for that (I watch YouTube wristwatch videos too), but what’s interesting to me is how these videos that really say nothing at all can still be compelling. If part of being a collector is a continual hunger for the next watch, perhaps these videos (and podcasts) reflect that: by never quite delivering anything.

That channel in particular does little for me, so I didn't watch the video.

IRT the topic of the OP, I'd put myself in the collector camp. I've always had an interest in watches, since I was very young. Enjoyment does not equate to price, though, that took years to learn. Market and trends have little to no impact on my purchasing decisions. Though, I do keep up on new releases, opinions and general buzz in the community.

What about obsessives? Or neurotics? Dare we say addiction?

What about during a 2 month service? Surely you need just one more Rolex
