"Switzerland in trouble"...what about our vintage?

Jony Ive says Switzerland is in trouble...the new Apple Watch looks like a home run...much better than I ever expected. Is your vintage watch going back in the safe, or are they safe for now?

I don't think smart watches will do anything to the vintage market.

Didn't they think the same when the digital and quartz watches came out?

Yep, and I saw this in Zurich at the weekend, so I'll use it to illustrate.

It was just parked - so not even moving, or emitting its sweet engine note - and people (including moi) were stopping to gawp, drool and take photos, but hey… it's just an old, out-dated, gas-guzzling, lumbering, smoky, heavy steel wagon, whose value must be hit so terribly hard by the (nasty) appearance of the hi-tech smart hybrids on the market, like the one in the last photo.

I've a feeling Ive is getting a bit carried away with his Apple hyperbole. Vintage watches are as far away from that gadget as, well... the Aston is from the Prius. I rest my case

Well I agree, but I will be ordering an Apple watch...it looks like they did it right. Until today I would have never considered it. I have been wearing vintage watches since I was in my early 20's...I'm a lot older now :)

I guess I could always move the vintage to the right wrist :)

I wonder if some of the middle of the road watch Co's will be selling apps or?? with their face and logo. You would have a TAG face on a Apple watch.

Don't think it will touch the watch market as they are bought by two different buyers.

Looks as if the iWatch will be useful for exercise, but I feel quite certain that it will not be waterproof to 2000ft like my vintage SD. Sorry, but I definitely agree with Karl........It looks as if it will be a neat toy...but it will never....I MEAN NEVER replace vintage Rolex...Or any Rolex for that matter

Other digital, HR watches and gadget watches?? They had better WATCHOUT...

JMHO of course

Great - be sure to let us know what you think. I recently got the iPhone 5s (64 gig), which is a pretty 'nifty' bit of kit too!

The thing people who spew stuff bs like this tend to forget is we don't actually buy the watches to know what time it is (well I don't). In the end, my iPhone is way more accurate/reliable than any of my watches. It goes beyond just telling time, for me. And that is where the true beauty of this hobby lies.

Ive also said the new iwatch is a "completely singular product". He didn't bother to explain how that is when it doesn't even function without an iphone.

Like Vincent said; current tech products just don't have any lasting appeal. Everything lives for 12 months and then something new comes along. True lasting appeal is much harder to come by and that DB5 is a perfect example of this. So are the nice watches posted earlier in this thread :-)

I think it was Adam that had a really good saying about the comparison of a photograph to a Monet!!!!!
Surely OP you are not concerned?
If you are I can help by taking all your vintages off your hands before the market crashes.

I think you hit it on the head. Our 5512's, 1675's, 6262's are iconic designs that have lasted decades...and will continue to.

With the iWatch, it will be vintage in 6 months - at least by "tech years".

Things are then compounded by the fact that the current younger generation is all about instant gratification. I'm fine with this since it means more vintage for the rest of us 👍😃

Who cares?!?! A vintage Rolex will always be on a completely different level.
I don't even see the purpose of such articles...

I highly doubt that the smart watch will do anything to the vintage market.

Hard to say what impact the iWatch will have for certain though I doubt it will really impact upon us die-hards! And must agree, that Aston looks amazing!
